Postby francsal » Thu Apr 27, 2006 5:59 pm

I am thinking about improving my graphics a bit. However, here in Guatemala, the choices are slim, and the prices are HIGH!

I was able, however to fing 2 cards that might be an improvement for my system. Needles to say, I

Well I wouldn't suggest any of those cards. Their too outdated. Personally if I were you I would look to buy online, and pay a bit more to get the card you really need. Personally I would suggest the ATi X800GTO or the nVidia 6800XT for a good mid level card.

Look at newegg, or better yet overclockers.co.uk as they are closer.

Thanks for both your answers!

Just to confuse you, I would go for the 9550.

Gee, thanks a bunch!

I would go for the 9550 if it you could mod it to the 9700 core.  But thats a risky operation as you have to bios flash the card with a compatible 9700 bios.  If you don't fancy trying that get the 6200, as long as it's not a "turbo cache" version.  Have you thought about buying a card from ebay and seeing if the seller would ship is to guatamala?

That would be your best move, certainly from a value for money point of view.

I'm sure if you offer to pay postage, where you are should'nt be much of an issue.

Neither the  nVidia XFX6200 256 MB or ATI 9550 256 MB are well suited for FS imo, you'd be far better off with a 128MB 6600GT or better.

Graphics Card RAM is not the crucial factor, its the speed of the Graphics processor. Which is why a 128MB 6600GT is better than a 256MB 6200 - and better by a long way.  ;)

OK, gotta go to the store now. So, It seems like a tie on the opinions. Now, people, really, which one would you think is faster? more detailed? is there a difference in image quality between them? or in speed? Plase, gotta run in about 15 minutes!!

Is the 9550 even DX9 compatible?

you need the 128 bit memory interface on the 9550m the 64 bit card sucks, also the 256mb card is not the one that is easily bios modded to a higher spec from what I read.

I'm not sure about performance figures, I'll try to get some now.

Hmm, I can't tell. I really think you need at least a 6600 or X800 series minimum. Either of the cards you chose are really inadequate. If I had to choose on the limted knowledge I have on them, I'd be thinking to get the ATI card. But the 256mb model is probably not as good as the 128mb one, not sure on that either though.
