Thanks for the advices.
Done all you said to the letter, & scandisked, defraged, scaned but to no avail. In dispare reinstalled winXPsp2.

It boots fast but after the "Welcome" bit, goes to a lighter bleu full screen and hungs for ever.

The Bios shows that Primary & Secondary Ide is NOT detected. Only one CDR drive shows detected.

NO flickering LED though.... !@"%$#?!.

Regarding backups I am almost OK, as this PC's HD was imaged (Ghost) with mine and anything we do is backed up to each other via my cabled network.

This second PC escaped whatever happened.
Is there anything else I could do to save the situation?
before try to boot with my "MaxBlast" floppy to reformat & repartition again?

hmmm.... not detecting the IDE drives in the BIOS?

That sounds like it could cause problems. Enter the BIOS and select the controller your boot drive is on. Check and see what the options are for that. If it is not already, set it to AUTO DETECT and see if the drive pops up.

Also, verify the controller is indeed enabled in the BIOS. Some BIOSes will have an option for enabling controllers.

I cannot see how that could be the case because if the controller was not enabled it would not see the drive at all.

Remove the CDROM and floppy, see if you still get the error, I know that a failing CDROM can cause this sort of behaviour, sorry I didn't think of it before.

Just removed the HD to have a look, and thought the narrow red cable (mobo to HD) seemed loose in socket.
I fitted a new one and it boots very fast (comparing to before), BUT! still all work except CTRL Panel & desktop properties.

Luckily local supplier will replace this 3m old HD if dead, or lend me other programs to check if it is virus.

The supplier gave me McFee and run virus check and AntiSpyware, but unfortunately nothing was found & situation still the same.

Does this mean reformat, partition & reimage again, or is there anything else I could try ?.              luke

Thanx NN,

I did the above twice yesterday, but does not seem to have in the menu "repair" and goes into install.

I run the setup via win Explorer.

As C.Panel is dead, I cannot get into twiqui to select autorun CD, Is there another way?

The way little things go haywire it must be virus, but even the MS web site virus check says not.

Fs9 is OK like everything else.

BTW what is "clean install" ?

I may be just grasping at straws but have you enabled SATA in the bios?

Clean Install= Wipe out the hard drive, write zero's to the drive, complete reinstall of Windows... no repair options.

I suppose will have to resort to that eventually.

Just for interest, in the state I am in if I sent emails from that PC will the virus spread?

Also if only "C" partitioned was reformated (cut the snakes head) & winXP with all other programs reloaded, would the virus still exist in the other partitions?

Yes Sata is enabled in Bios, after all The HD seems to be OK with everything running except C.Panel & desktop's properties.                     luke

Are there any freebee progs, like adware, that scan & clear viruses?
