What do you think of AMD Opteron?

I plan on getting the 146 model (CAB2E stepping) for the PC I'm building, but I havn't seen any one using one here. Is it worth getting?

if your going AMD, the only word you need to know is Athlon. some numbers after it, but athlon

Opteron is the AMD equivalent of Celeron. opteRON, CeleRON, get it

boards arent going to be that much more expensive, and it's a gaming oriented processor, as well as be able to multitask well.

AMD is phasing out the Opteron. Do not buy that processor because of overclock stories. In dual core you are better off putting the money into a X2 4800+ or better yet, an FX60.

If you are limited by funds, purchasing an Opteron for the goal of overclocking it will not net any significant FS9 results.

You will not have full support for flight simulator because FS9 does not recognize a dual core processor, however using the RIGHT dual core will enhance your sim simply because it will provide more resources in allowing you to assign the cores to hardware,  background applications and the game.

I thought the Opteron compares to the Xeon processers also, and sempron was AMD's equivalent to Intel's Celeron

When selecting a processor for cost effective vs. real world processor ability, always choose a processor with the highest cache possible (1mb cache or better). This is true of dual or single core. In dual core, make SURE each core has a 1mb or greater cache, not the combined amount of both cores.

Right now in AMD the San Diego core provides the best cost to ability ratio for those on a budget.

my apologies, i had been misinformed.

Opteron is server processing, to compete against Xeon, and Sempron replaced Duron in the low-end market. my apologies.

however, the fact remains the same, Athlon San Diego is the way to go.

The San Diego models, 3700+ and 4000+, were based on the E4 processor stepping. The E4 stepping was also used in the FX55, FX57, X2 3800+, X2 4200+, and X2 4600+ CPU's, according to a Tom's Hardware chart I have.

I recently assisted a chap who bought a 3700+ and it turned out to be a Toledo cored X2 cpu (E6 cpu stepping) with a disabled core, leaving one core running as a 3700+. This seems to be a common trend among a few single core CPU's now.

It is known that the E6 stepping tends to overheat much faster than the E4 stepping in an overclocked environment.

Since mine  was labeled San Diego and after o-clocking, still runs pretty cool; Is it safe for me to assume it's a  true E4 / San Diego ?

It sounds to me like a screw job... I dont think AMD is distributing CPU's as a San Diego with a Toledo core. I do believe that would be illegal.

In the United States there are laws in place that specify product misrepresentation is illegal and over a certain dollar amount can be considered a felony or in a high dollar amount, a federal offense.

I am not an attorney or close to it however if I purchase a product based on its technical description which is authorized by the manufacture, I better get for my money what that description specifies.

if it's true that his core is a toledo and not a San Diego, then someone should look into enabling the second core.
