Lol, well one thing you could do to protect it (im guessing you got it off one of those great after houres sites ) is get fire fox. The amount of crud I have gotten from those things has been cut out almost completely since makeing the switch.

I have 2 GOLDEN RULES with my PC


1. Backup regularly onto a 2nd hard drive + 2nd PC. (it's easy & for most stuff takes only a few seconds per week drag & drop)

2. Run a good, updated daily, anti virus.

Both have been learned the hard way. More than once on No.1!!

Yes Pete, you are exactly right. I realise the risk of course but I'm personally willing to take the risk and I do have backups of my data on isolated hard drives. I could only lose recent work if worse came to worse. If I am doing anything important I try to back it up straight away.

I was trying to put the whole viral risk factor into perspective is all. Obviously, critical or public data must be kept as secure as possible, often within financial constraints.

I have put Firefox on as my default browser. Now, how do I get all 107 of my Favorites into it?

I don't really like what I see when I fire it up; maybe I will like it as I grow familiar with it.

What are coolies? Is that a slang term for a person from China? What is history dumping? What is my options tab?

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm a trucker-- not a computer genius...


Edit: There seems to be no email icon on Firefox; looks like I have to exit and start SBC Yahoo! to send an email. This is either a design flaw or I am missing something...

Well firefox is a third party software. You may be able to get a plug in for SBC, but I am unsure. I messed up as to where to find you options, its in the "Tools" drop down menu at the top. In there you will be able to import your settings from SBCs browser. Also I know that SBC is a POP E-Mail client, so you could use Thunderbird or Outlook for that.

I don't think you can just import your favorites from IE, you may have to visit each site and bookmark them.

Coolies? sorry Im lost on that one also and I have been using Firefox for years, lol.

The other setting he refers too can be found in "Tools-options"
There you can st various settings and also empty your cache and cookies (the stuff that the browser stores from websites you visit, reason for storing this info makes page loadings faster when you return to the site).

Firefox doesn't have its own email, you now want to get Thunderbird, it is made by the same people that make Firefox.
With it you can set it up to access your email accounts so you won't have to mess with going back and forth to get mail.

If you don't care for the looks of Firefox you can go to "tools-themes" in the pop up click on get more themes and search for various user created themes.

You can also look for extensions (tools-extensions-get more extensions)  to add to your browser. This is the best feature of Firefox it is totally customizable, you can have it as loaded as you want or as light. You have choices what you add.

I gave up on norton last year. The moment I purged my system of it the thing sped up to lightspeed. The only time i've been affected by any virus is when I was installing Norton, I don't know whether it was a coincidence but while i was installing norton, and a virus my HD also imploded. That was a fun evening. I now use the AVG free thingy and have had no trouble at all. It doesn't affect the speed of my computer and doesn't seem to find anything so I'm happy.
