i just placed an order for a long needed Hard drive. my 70gb is getting cramped. so with my $200 my uncle gave me in an amazon.com gift certificate,i got me a:

Maxtor
250GB
SATA/150 (max my mobo supports)
7200rpm.

perfect, space for price. me happy, cause now i can begin major stoarge and a RAID with my IDE's for FS.

SATA II (300mbs) are backward compatible with SATA 150.

I pay around $80 US retail for a WD SATA II 200mb drive here.

i paid $120(US) and got 250gb, so i think it's a good deal. plus it's 150 and not 300, which is priced more for the speed that i wont need.

and $8 for express shipping. i HATE waiting, i usually dont shop online... so yes i miss out on deals, i know, espically NewEgg i hear is really good.

Once you know you newegg Their catch phrase holds true. I dont know of any other online shop that has the selection, pricing, shipping speed / quality, and customer service of newegg. Them and Frozen CPU

BTW nice choice of drive WD are probibly the best drives I have ever used.  Personally I'm thinking of getting rid of my two 80s, and get one 74GB Rapter, and one 250GB Caviar (Rapter for games, 250GB for system).

I couldn't agree more, thats all i've ever had, various WD drives. my current situation is a 30gb WD and a 40GB WD, both from dell computers. but i wanted to see how maxtor scaled up. now yes it's harder to compare since my WD's are IDE and my maxtor is SATA/150, but i still want to see some comparison.

so what im going to do is this major project.

windows X64 is fine and all, but i need the full compatibility back... so im switching back to 32 bit.

my new drive will have:

200gb for general usage
50gb for backup programs and files

then i will attempt a RAID +0 operation of the IDE drives for FS. now im not sure what will happen, since one drive is 30gb and the other is 40gb. where does the last 10gb go?

i dare not bring my comp to school, cause my friend will try to install linux ubuntu on my system again. i dont need to bite off more than i can chew.

In the simplest way for me to explain
In RAID 0 you will end up with a fast 70 (or 68-9gig) Gig drive.
So you shouldn't loose the 10gig difference.

But I am uncertain if you can raid two drives of different size? Im sure you can but I shall leave that for the experts to say for certain.

what i was going for is not 70gb, but 2 30gb's with the same files. as far as i remember this is raid 0, you may be talking about raid 1. but like you said, waiting for the experts.

i get my A+ comp repair cert, and our class barely touched RAID's. we didn't even have a lab, which i was hoping for, cause i long intended for a FS on a RAID.

You got it backwards, lol

RAID 1 is mirrored, Raid 0 is two or more drives combined as one.

No reason to appologise, i just learned that a week or so ago myself when I decided to give RAID a try.

Actually easier than I thought to set up, a whole reformat of two drives,  setting up RAID 0 and installing XP took 31 minutes! which is a lot faster than I expected also!

Last reformat/reinstall I did on a Dell took nearly 5 hours, so I don't know how much the RAID had to do with the reinstall speed or if it is due to better hardware, or both???

Not only the RAID 0 is fast and offers the most drive space the major downfall is one drive goes bad all of it does.
But I solved that concern with a external HD for bakcing up, and also storage.

YAY!!!! IT ARRIVED!!!!

now my space quadruples, from 70gb to 320gb!!! i'm happy that i made it past 100gb

im gonna hold off on the raid thing at the moment, time is of the essence, and it's not a major importance. plus i'll take my comp to school so my band of "newly certified computer technicians (including me)" can run the raid correctly.

darn, right as i was looking through my drives, i realized one was mising. whoops, i unplugged my DVD-RW.

what i did is one power strand had all molex connectors, and the other had molex and sata connectors. i flipped the two so i could have all my hard drives on one stand and my fans and opticals on another. managed to plug in my CD-RW, but not my DVD-RW. oh well... i'll do it later, im in no rush to use it.
