Ive been thinking about the AMD 64 4000+ and the AMD 64 3700+. There is quite a price difference between the two..

..So im willing (if you will guide me through Safely) to overclock the 3700+...

Cheers all.

Good lord this is FUN !

You always hear stuff like,  "that's a favorite CPU among O/C-ers" and wonder..

I'm just now trying this stuff.. A nameless (he owns a demented pig) forum member has graciously given me a solid footing/understanding of this mysterious overclocking. I have no experiece or references.. but this 3700 SanDiego   H A S  to be a good o/c candidate if  "I"  can make it whizzz..

If I do my math correctly.. I've got the equivalent of a 4400 right now (or at least a slightly o/c-ed 4000) out of this 3700 and it's not gone over 40C yet..

Remember kids that once you get above 4000+ speeds, you are just running a overclocked 4000+ as the 4X00 series are dual core processers. A 3700+ running 2.6 or 2.7Ghz should be quite sufficent. Personally I like to max everything so I would get a better cooler on there and push that sucker above 3Ghz but thats just me.

Call a spade a spade, a San Diego is an exceptional bit of kit.

The 4400+ and the 3700+ both have the same speed cores and L2 cache levels, the 4400+ is basically just 2 x 3700's on the same piece of silicon. The 3700+ will overclock further than a 4400+ because the heat generated from the 2 cores is greater.

In a single core app, the San Diego is a better choice. In a dual core app, the Toledo is far, far better, providing the dual core implementation in the software is done well.

As I don't have an X2 or dual core apps, I cannot report much else other than that in a multi-tasking environment, dual core is supposed to be better, though I wonder how this would benefit, unless, say, you were doing a long DVD shrink and wanted to fly FS9 at the same time perhaps.

AMD are going to be releasing some 5000 series cpu's but they have more cache ram and no more, or little more speed. Many say the 3800+ is a good performer when overclocked and every bit as good as a 4400+, but I think they are mostly fanboys who payed too much for them when they were released and will do anything to justify their purchases, they have never tried the cpu's with higher L2 cache.

Jimbo, you won't get a bad cpu in the 4400+, it won't overclock quite as high but it gives you dual core ability.

It basically depends on whether you wish to pay a price premium now or later. If you have to upgrade, I don't think the cost will be much different either way, but if you buy into an X2 now, you'll be less likely to upgrade to the upcoming models. I agree, a dilemma.

I had no such problem making the choice, I couldn't afford the X2

See how much I know .. lol  (enought to get myself into trouble)...

AMD's numbering system, I thought, was a reference for the overall performance..  i.e.   a  2500 could be compared to a  2.5 Pentium.. and so forth. I guess that can be misleading. So a person buying a 4400 is going to expect an out of the box increase over the 3700 that right now (like us simmers) he won't see ?.

Man this is confusing  ::)

EDIT: Somebody please slap me... Im confusing my self and everybody else about which CPU i want..!

I couldn't find somebody to slap me.. so I slapped myself !

At one point.. I was researching all this stuff and thought, "for crying out loud.. just get the 4400 and the X1900XL and be done with it".. "you enjoy FS so much.. quit trying to economize". And there IS an argument for that approach. Problem there though.. you kinda gotta pick your point on the tech-wave and work with it. Staying right in front costs way more than the experience is worth.. and you'll get that experience, 1/2-price, eventually, if you pick a spot on the wave 6-months to a year back. Once you go to the crest, you're almost committed to that extra expense from then on out..

OK .. someone slap me now..
