Screen Resolution

My PC has a Dell 990 monitor and a Radeon 9800 Pro video card.  I have my resolution set at 1280-1024 (Highest 32 bit).
My problem is that the letters ended up somewhat difficult for me to read. Can I lower the screen resolution and still maintain good graphics.

I'm not sure if the following data pertains to "native resolution" but here are the specs:

Optimal preset resultion - 1024 x 768 @ 75-85 Hz

Highest preset reolution - 1600-1200 at 75 Hz

Highest capable is 1600 x 1200 @ 75 Hz.

My DPI is presewntly set at 96.

Which reolution do I follow. Presently the resolution is set at 1280 X 1024.

Another tweak to use for much better text display is CLEAR TYPE fonts. This will make text dramatically clearer on the screen.

Right click the desktop, goto properties/appearance/effects...... tick the box that says: use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts........ and select "Clear Type" in the box, save the settings and that should help a lot.

You don't have to run your 3D apps such as FS9 at your desktop resolution either, you can use a lower resolution on the desktop and a higher one in the sim. This method can cause some unexpected results on a CRT monitor and actually reduce the refresh rate when the mode switch occurs, at least this has happened to my combination of hardware.

Ah, is your's a CRT monitor? It defaults to standard type resolutions.... ie, they are proportionate to 800 x 600.

try these.........1152 x 864 or 1280 x 960 ......always use 32bit color.

If your monitor is a "standard" size, then those resolutions will give an undistorted picture.

Think I got myself a happy medium. I set my desktop resolution at 1024x768x32 and my FS9 at highest capable - 1600x1200. Seems to work OK except that the FS9 menu letters are somewhat small but readable. I'll see how it works out at this setting. By the way my fonts are set for "Clear Type" and my monitor is a 19" Dell P990 CRT.

If you have FPS related problems you could reduce the resolution in the sim, particularly if you are using AA and AF filtering. 1152 x 864 x 32 is needed to read some panels and gauges. I'm using 1280 x 960. So many people are using huge resolutions and wonder why their FPS sucks, particularly where filtering is turned on.

My CRT is quite happy at 1280x1024, but I run FS9 at 1024x768 : graphics are not noticeably worse, and that FS menu text is a whole lot easier to read...

I got my FS9 set at 1600x1200x32. It has not affected the appearance of the panel (gauges, label, indicators and all). However, it did make the "Shift Z" information (lat., .ong. speed, etc) smaller but readable. si I guess I'll stay with the 1600x1200 setting on the FS and go 1124x980 on my monitor. seem to work out OK for me. But thanks for advise.

i see nothing wrong with 1024x768... i mean most of use are about a foot or two from the screen. do we really all need 50" of monitor a foot from us?

Ya I also run 1024x768 (unless benchmarking) and I run fine like that. I don't see much improovement graphically with higher resolutions.
