What do you think?

Postby Viper22 » Fri Mar 17, 2006 3:38 pm

I'm thinking of a new computer I want to get, just some basic theories (i've posted a while back on what i want, but now ive changed me ideas)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400
2 GB of RAM (probably OCZ)
use my current radeon x850pro, which means my motherboard will have to have 8x agp :(

if i get a motherboard with 16x pci, then i will have to get a new vid card, but i'm not willing to spend the money :-/

dunno, is there any new technology coming out that i should wait for?

P.S. might go for a 10,000 rpm hard drive
Mess with the best, die like the rest.

Core 2 Duo E6600
Gigabyte 965 DQ6
2GB Mushkin DDR2 800
eVGA 7900 GT KO
250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10
Silverstone Zeus 750W
Thermaltake shark case modded with green fans and

Hi Viper:

CPU: Great choice - the 4400+ is built on the Toledo core and so has 1mb L2 cache/core = total 2mb L2 cache. Great processor.

RAM: OCZ, fine, 2Gb will last you a while. No problems here:

Motherboard: See THIS link. It's known to be a great motherboard, and has AGP for now, and PCI-E for when you want to upgrade in the future.

Graphics Card: If you decide to go for a PCI-E board with no AGP, don't go for anything less than a 6600GT. Set that as your minimum, and go for something higher if you can get it.

Hard Drive: I assume you mean the 10,000rpm Raptor drives. Perfectly OK and very quick, but you must make sure you have very good case cooling. Those bits of kit get very warm, and need good airflow to keep them safe.

I agree with GeForce. The only thing I have to add is that the 6800 series has come down massivly in price, so looking at a 6800XT ($185 last I looked) wouldn't hurt. The other thing is with that Raptor, I cannot stress enough to keep it cool. I have seen three catch fire because people had them cramped in with 2 other drives and no cooling on them.

Cheers

GeForce, have you got a link or two that shows some good results or reviews using that board? It's a fairly new chipset and I'm curious how users are finding it.

Personally Id go with the Nforce 4 4x 939 boards, AGP and Nvidia has always shown to be one of the best chipset makers

You can't knock AGP for producing bad chipsets, that's for sure.

Hi Congo,

I'm mainly going by THIS 54-page thread where people have been discussing all the major aspects. Obviously I haven't read the entire thing, but looking through it gives me the general impression that it's a good bit of kit.

There's a review a review HERE. The conclusion seems to say it's not the best, but for a mobo with AGP & PCI-E (a rarity) it does what it's meant to do perfectly. Apparently it doesn't overclock too well, but unless Viper is going to overclock, I don't think this is going to be a major problem.

Also my friend has one, and his computer is running perfectly :)
