Finally bought new system

Hi all
well I finally went out today and bought my new M/b and Graphic card for the AMD 3700 San Diego cpu that I have stashed in my shed.

I ended up getting an Asus A8N SLI 32 m/b and a Leadtek 7800GT graphic card.

This means I will have to wait until more funds become available to buy another 7800gt some time in the future.(have to save up the loose change, can't use the credit card as the wife just doesn't understand why a man NEEDS more speed  and MUST have a new system )

Looking forward to getting these goodies going !

I'm hoping my existing power supply (generic 450w unit or so it says !) is going to be up to the job.

I know that if I run SLI I will need a 550 watt unit but I hope I can get by with the unit I have now until I go SLI.

Power supplies always are the weak link in any system I think. The thing that always worries me is that you have this cheap piece of c##p powering your expensive system and when it goes faulty ( and you can have a sure bet - that they will go faulty - only a matter of time)that the cheap piece of c##p takes out your expensive M/B etc.

I had a power supply go on me and it took out the M/B, a 256Mb Ram module and my Modem card.

When I go to buy a decent P/S I will be looking for one that has some form of short circuit protection on it  so it doesn't fry the M/B.

Why can't M/B makers put on-board replaceable fuses on their products. You look at most electrical equipment and they all have a protectioon device ie- a simple fuse  >:(

I believe that M/B s have fusable links on them , but with the multi-layered board construction it is almost impossible to replace them.

Anyhow I 've had my whinge for the day.  :)

Hiper Type R is what your looking for in the relm of anything. Read the reviews and you will see that their isn't a better PSU on the market.

Well not to say anything, because those are great, I have found a good brand to be allied also. Not modular but good and strong. less than 1% flucation on the 12volt rail. My 550wt powered 2 dvd's 6600GT AGP, 64 3200, msi k8n neo, 3 cathodes, 4 80mm fans, 3 120mm fans, and 2 led strips. And never had a problem

That will probably be the absolute borderline minimum supply for that rig... Post the amp ratings on the 12V, 3.3v and 5v rails (on PSU lable) and I can tell you if it is up to the task.

Well alot of PSUs can do that, however the Type R is by far the industry leader for relyability also. There have been things I have done to this PSU that I have done to the X-Connect, Thermaltake, and OCZ PSUs before it that they couldn't handle. Things like accidently letting two exposed wires tutch (took out the Thermaltake and OCZ PSUs) and connecting a DVD drive whilst the comp was on (Took out the X-Connect and the DVD drive). The other really nice function about this PSU is that its rated at 580W, however it can safely opperate up to 640W. One of the only PSUs that I know of that can take a 60W fluctuation and not loose preformance

well for a budget an allied is great, i ran them, right now though on one of those cheapo 250wt things. My friend with a 64 3000 has been running an Allied 450wt for 2 years stable.

I'd be interested to know for sure if 95% of the PSU's that are ultimately responsible for the world as we know it are actually cheap junk, while we banter here over what is and what isn't good in a PSU.

Anyone got a statistic? I bet the contract always goes to the lowest bidder

all I know is my current PSU weighs about as much as my CPU, cost me 7 bucks, and doesnt even have a name on it, just 250wt

Well what we must all remember is that the PSU is the #1 critical part in your case. If you get a underpowered PSU or just a plain old doddgy one, you might as well just throw your rig out the window. Ask gunny, it took out his GPU along with itself. So yes I do have a $120 PSU, and yes that could have bought me a second gig of RAM or I could have put that twards getting a better GPU, however I now have the security of knowing that it is virtually impossable to fry this thing. The reviewers have tried, and failed.
