Joysticks vs Yoke?

Postby StarJourney » Wed Feb 15, 2006 8:51 pm

Hi all, fixin' to upgrade the old joystick.  Got me some hard choices to make.  Lessee, there's the X-45 for $50, the X-52 for $120 some-odd, or the CH Yoke for $129.  All in local stores.  Hmmm.  Is the X-52 worth $70+ dollars more than the X-45?  What does it do that the -45 doesn't?  On the other hand, the yoke would be awfully nice to have, but there's the issue of more buttons on the joystick, plus the whole price difference.

Any thoughts/comments?

It's really up to you. Personally I prefer a joystick because I don't have the desk space for a yoke. Plus I have tried the CH Yoke at my friends house and it's rather stiff.

I have a MS Force Feedback 2. Has a rudder (twister) and lots-o-buttons plus a throttle. I got it for about $100 4 or 5 years ago. Not sure what it'd be now.

Rimshot it isn't rather stiff,it just that you got so use to joystick ,i have both the Joyst i use for combat planes or extra 300, but normal jet comertials or privates planes with my homebuilt cockpit ahh...nothing compares with it 8) 8) 8)

I rather to make it the most realistic possible,I know airbus is using joystick,But My personal recomend buy rudder pedals, yoke, throtle and have a nice fly ;)

Yes you can use a JS with rudder pedals.

i personally use both the JS and yoke (not at the same time) all depends on the aircraft Im flying.

IMHO ChProducts are the way to go, a little costly but you get what you pay for, I own everything CH makes and will never look back ;)

I have the X45 and to be honest it sucks, the rocker switch for rudders is useless so you still need the whole setup to use rudder pedals.

the only other JS that I own that is worth anything is the M$ FFB2, a shame they no longer make them ;)

Using a yoke will have a totally different feel to a stick. It is supopsed to be easier though once you know how to use it. Personally I don't want really want one and would rather buy the latest Saitek stick - the X52 - if I was going to update.

My father who is also an avid virtual pilot has been using a flight yoke since around FS98. He came by the house and saw my X-45. Then he went to use it. I told him I would love to upgrade to the X-52. So he goes and buys himself one and wants me to come over and program it for him this weekend. What a nice guy huh? ;D. Anyway the X-45/52 is the way to go but then again of coarse it's just my personal preference.

It all depends on what you will be flying. If you are flying planes ALL THE TIME then concider going for the Yolk BUT if you intend to fly Helicopters at all i would then go for a joystick (Best of both worlds). They say rudder pedals are great and i wish i could afford a set because i would definitly own a set. i personally use a Saitek X45 which i am very happy with. it is your own personal choice and what you are going to be flying and what is going to feel comfortable for you. If you have any friend with joysticks or yolks go and try theirs and see what feels comfortable. Only you can make the final disision.

Had my doubts about using a stick for the sim as I'm used to the yoke in real planes (not to mention using right hand for throttle and left for control input)... but I didn't want to spend the dough on a yoke with so many less features, and I knew I'd be flying alot of stick-controlled planes in the sim. So... I just got used to it. Works fine.
space is a consideration, too- my "simpit" is also my regular workstation; using the X45 allows me to fly or work without rearranging anything. Try that with a yoke clamped to the desk in front of your keyboard...!
Haven't even had any trouble going back and forth between my sim setup and real planes- thought for sure I'd accidentally lower the nose when I wanted to advance the throttle or whatever, but nothing like that has happened.
I heartily recommend the X45 (or X52)- throttle and controller for less money than a typical yoke, and tons of features and buttons. Excellent controller.

I'm sure a full CH setup is a beautiful thing, but I wouldn't say the X45 sucks. I eventually built my own rudder pedals, but I was getting pretty good with the rudder bar, and overall I like this controller. You just can't beat it for the price!

Using a Saitek Cyborg Evo Force here which has a twist rudder that works ok in the stick, by ok I mean:
slightly too sensetive, gentle movnments take practise
can be abit fiddly to use while your pulling up or down hevily

as for rudder peddles I made some of my own back in the first flight unlimiteds days whith my dad and if the Ch stuff is anywhere near as good then I would recomend them.  Although I can no longer use my rudder pedels due to them been only gameport   ::)

Thanks for the info, guys.  I think I'll pick up the X-45 when I get the chance, then.  Just seems more practical then the yoke, not to mention less space-consuming.  I'll practice with the rudder bar. If that doesn't work, I'll start saving pennies for the pedals!  :)  Or build 'em....
