Cases and RAM questions :)

Postby GeForce » Sun Feb 05, 2006 8:28 am

Hi all, a couple more of my delightful questions ;D

Firstly, which case? I'm going to go for either the Thermaltake Tsunami or the Coolermaster Wavemaster. They are about the same price, so that's not an issue. Any suggestions which is better?

Secondly, what is Kingston RAM like quality-wise? I've heard good things about it, are they correct?

Thanks,

Jon 8)

I can't help you for the case, but for the RAM Kingston ram is very reliable and i would recommend it highly.  I personnally use Crucial ram but Kingston is equally as good.

The only note i would add is that Kingston standard ram, like any standard ram, does not oc very well/at all.  If you don't oc your ram then it won't be a problem.

Case. Those are nice, but get the TT Soprano. It is only $80 and has much better cooling than the Tsunami. If your looking to go $100 or more, look twards the Lian Li PC65 cases.

As far as RAM goes Kingston is good, but Corsair XMS and OCZ Gold are the best there is. Ive got a 1GB XMS kit with 2-3-3-6 timings and its amazing.

Cheers

The TT Soprano and Tsunami both seem to have:

- Front (intake) 120x120x25 mm, 1400rpm, 21dBA
- Rear (exhaust) 120x120x25 mm, 1400rpm, 21dBA
- Side (intake) 90x90x25 mm,1800rpm, 21dBA

Have I missed something? :)

Cheers,

yes. The rear on the Tsunami is an 80mm not a 120mm, my friend made that mistake and had to RMA his case for a Soprano.

I've used a fair bit of Kingston RAM with no problems, some shops here wont stock it because they say the quality is variable and people have problems, but I never experienced that.

I found that it overclocks 10% no hassles.

I think PC cases are just epenis extensions, get a reasonable PSU.

But I have one of those (hiper type R) so why not show off your hard earned hardware, that we love so dearly.

I brought a Jeantech Butterfly V2 for my new set up. Now I don't know much about cooling but the only fan I added was a big 120mm one to the front and the whole thing stays cool to the touch.

Looks like a beast as well. ;D

Kingston Value RAM, (all Kingston RAM is now branded "value") is good, however the timings can be a bit errant. I bought 2 sticks of 512 from Tolworth computer fair at the end of October and they were 2.5-3-3-8. In January i bought 1 stick of 512 for a friend from the same place, and that was 3-3-3-8. Check before you buy...

Depends on who you are trying to impress I suppose.

When it all boils down, most people need

1. a cool* case that's in keeping with their Decor,
[img]http://www.simviation.com/yabbuploads/3762[1].jpg[/img]
*cool as in not hot. This is a most important consideration.
Now this case looks smart, black, cool, but it has a major hassle. The optical drives are hidden behind a fancy door, what a pain in the ring!

the rest of us either

2. outwardly don't care much but secretly admire their machines

This is my $12 case, which I am very proud of as long as I can't hear you all snickering in the background.........
Go on, laugh all you like but can you match it for performance? Another thing about this case is that it has all rolled metal edges, it's a full depth Midi tower which means my drives won't interfere with mainboard components and it has a plethora of fan stations with multiple mounting holes for different size fans, it also has a fan and cpu duct on the missing side cover to feed cool fresh air to the processor.

I just cannot, for the life of me, fathom why people will spend a small fortune on a PC case when they should be buying a better CPU or video card, it's just a %&#*.

Quite right... but didn't you know that the more LED's, the faster your PC runs, congo?  Most of my mates think that...  ::)
Take one of them.. He asked me to borrow a set of stereo speakers for his PC. I had 3 sets, an old Packard Bell beige pair circa 1999, and of very poor quality, a creative 2.0 pair, lots of watts and power, excellent sound (black)... bought in error circa 2005.... and a 3.5w pair of sexy looking silver "Advent" stock speakers of AWFUL quality which came with my base unit.
Guess which one he borrowed? Yep, the "Advent".
Even after i'd explained this to him.
I ask you...
Rob.
P.S. not so sure about the hot pink...... :o   ;D

Well teh main reason people "trick out" their PCs is because of LAN parties. For instance I'm going to one in April where the person with the best case wins a DFI LanParty, eVGA 7800GTX, and a 650 Prescott. So spending a small fortune will get me a small fortune in parts. Also when your like me and your computer is at about its peak and theres nothing left to upgrade you start makeing it look as hot as it runs.

Cheers
