Antivirus Program

Hey Guys and Ladies,   I'm like most people in the thoughts of not going on the WEB w/o virus protection.   I am having a lot of trouble at this time trying to get my  antivirus program to work right.   It's been several days now in  "working " with the company  and just can't get it right.   My Antivirus program is " etrust  EZ Antivirus "    Do any of you'all have an  "antivirus " program that is  RELIABLE  ?    My "program"  expires in March 2006.   Looking to change..        Appreciate your help.     caveman

Free AV programs have their ups and downs...

UP = free

Downs = lack of protection and sometimes heavy CPU cycle draws

There are several good AV products that do not kill resources. I use the ENTERPRISE EDITION of McAfee v8.0 as it does not reduce system resources at all. I have never had a succesfull attack in the 3 years I have used it. Unlike NORTON and other AV products I have tested.. McAfee Enterprise catches everything. For full web protection a good browser attack program is also needed for full protection. Spybot Search and Destroy works great for that as long as you update it and immunize the system once a month.

The regular editions of McAfee and most other AV software kill system resorces. Anything made by Symantic is the worst junk and competely takes over a system.. killing resources.

Most ENTERPRISE edtions of professional AV software are designed for the least system resource impact because corporations do not want their workstations bogged down.

I use Norton (yea it is a resource hog but dont auto schedule it for the middle of the night and be flying in FS) Not a good combo there, crashed the comp.... I also use the free Trend micro from http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp its just a scanner, but it works..... Found many damn trojans norton couldnt find! Cheers, Gunny

I have the Mcafee suite and it works wonders for me.
if your looking to go free, the best program is Antivir.

My "computer shop" guys recommended the free version of AVG to me.  Been running it now fro over a year.  Works great as far as I can tell.  I had been running McAffee...and it created nothing but problems, crashed my machine, and so on.  Before that I was running Norton... and was very unhappy with that.

That and $5.00 will buy you a cup of coffee at Starbucks  ;).  Your mileage may vary.

McAfee is just as bad as Norton unless it is the Enterprise edition designed for corporate use. The Enterprise edition of Norton is not perfect but is still better than their standard or McAfee's standard product.

IMHO any standard AV (other than corporate enterprise editions) software sucks and is designed to take over a system to "call home" as much as it tries to protect it. System crashes are caused by the bloated junk the "standard" and "professional" edition software installs. In Norton's case... their product records and sends home data in my opinion Symantic has no business seeing.

"True" Corporate rated AV software does not contain that junk due to the security-levels corporations demand be in place for thier systems. That is why enterprise edition AV software is better


As for free-bee's ... I cant vouch for what is good or bad as I would prefer to have an update account with reliable, well established AV service.

Or just ignore the culture of PC paranoia and scrap Antivirus altogether.

I only recommend this for people who are hellbent on top performance and trouble free operation though.

The Lemmings need antivirus to keep us safe, so I'm told.

AVG takes less than 10MB of space to run in the background, and only needs cpu cycles when it does a scan.

I switched from Norton AV because my subscription ran out and have never looked back since.  My system was sluggish with Norton compared to AVG.

Hey Guys,   This is very educational for me.  I had no idea that a PC could be bogged-down  or  CRASHED because of an antivirus program.  I'm not looking for a freeby - - - just wanted protection.  NOW  I  want more ,    sorta like no junk, also.       This may explain some  unexplained crashes I've had lately [have to blame something - - not me - - ]   Say - -Delta,  could you give me the address of " AVG " ?  Just want to do a lot of checking before  I buy.       To all you guys - -  Thank you very much for your help.   To  others  ;    I have a month to FIGHT with my present program,  so I would appreciate your input also.          caveman

It's free so if you don't like it uninstall it, i am however extremely happy with avg and have been for over 8 months since i first installed it.

The free programs such as AVG are not only better and use less resource but they don't require a subscription and aren't bloated with un-needed stuff.

If your looking to remove junk (for free) grab yourself CrapCleaner (or also called  CCleaner) .

For Anti-Virus...
I have AVG (free version) and it seems to work fine, regular automatic up-dates.
I also have the registered version of Norton System Works.
Norton, and AVG, don't seem to detect Trojan Horses, the biggest problem for me, but I like "Norton System Works" utilities for automatically sorting out my directory, short-cut, hard drive, etc, problems... ...!

To detect "Trojan Horses" I have to search the 'Net to install dedicated programs to sort out this particular annoying problem...!!!
"Adaware", and "Anti-virus" removal programs don't seem to detect these dangerous Trojan virus's... ...!

I use Nod32, one of the best anti-virus around.

It Did excellent in some of the various virus tests.

Its has an excellent detection rate, and DOESN'T slow your system down*

Even though you have to pay, its an excellent anti-virus solution, with brilliant detection rates.
