Memory Question

Postby dcunning30 » Mon Jan 23, 2006 12:00 pm

My system is:

Celeron 2.4Mhz
512Meg  system memory
GeForce 5500 128Meg

I'm thinking about upgrading my memory.  My question is, will more memory noticably improve my FS9 experience?

Thanks

A hardware forum question. ;)

I'd say that card needs changing more than anything else - but you'd need to make sure it would be compatible with your computer as it doesn't appear to be very powerful and I doubt it has a PCI-express slot.

When you refer to card, I assume you mean video.  If so, you're correct, my fairly old low-end computer only has a PCI slot and my video card is to the best of my knowlege one of the top end PCI cards.  Most things more powerful are either AGP or PCI-Express.

So I gather you're saying more memory won't matter much?

Oh well.

Thanks, thinking of going to 1G, but I don't want to spend the money if I won't see any appreciable results.

If you are adding to your systems memory it depends on how much you add. Adding system memory will allways help the through put of any computer.

You might want to consider upgrading your entire system but rember if you change mother boards your windows will no longer work. Unless you are using windows XP professional you can only put the home edition on one system so if you change your mother board you no longer have the same system so windows will not work. If your system is still under warranty you can call the manufactuer and they can help ypu reset the key you will need to reactivate windows with. If not you will have to buy another operating system.
Trust me I have allready gone through this.
MIcrosoft will not support your system as it is not OEM equipment. 8)

Well I have 3 computers. One with 1GB another at 512MB and another at 256mb.
RAM is brilliant for fast load up of icons and great for general computer usage.

For FS, although important, 512 RAM is not bad - I have run it on 512 myself. It is the card that really makes a difference.

Go ahead and buy it, but you won't see frames shoot up or anything like that. You may notice a difference, but man - put the

I just had a look and I think you are right - you can't improve your card. If you don't want to splash out on a new system and want to upgrade I guess it better be ram.  :-X

I have a year 2000 compaq and have been running the simulator on very basic settings because I enjoy a smooth flight and landing more than anything. My computer had 128MB of ram, I just bought and installed 512MB more for around $80. Loadings are faster all around, and Im able to up my settings to about Medium-low, which to me is great because I'm used to very low settings. But upgrading memory helped alot from my perspective.

That is quite correct. This man is updtating from 512. There will be a difference, but I doubt it will be major. Much better use of money to wait and upgrade the system, if that is feesible.
