Front panel wiring to motherboard:

Postby Woodlouse2002 » Sun Jan 22, 2006 1:22 pm

Having recently acquired what is now infact a complete new computer I have a question. On the front panel there are two USB ports a minijack thing for headphones and another for a mic. There is also a firewire port. Now the USB's had plugs on the other end, so they were simple enough to install. The audio jacks were also fairly simple as the motherboard manual made it fairly clear as to what went where.

The Firewire on the other hand makes no sense to me There are 7 wires, black, white, green, red, orange, blue and another duller grey/black.

Now the wires are labled as thus:
VP(+12v)= white with a jumpwire.
VG(GND1)= black with a jumpwire VG(GND2)
TPB- = red
TPB+ = green
TPA- = Orange
TPA+ = blue
And SHIELD.

Now I would greatly appreciate if someone could tell me how to correctly connect the above wires to the header that is laid out as .::::

Can anyone tell me?

Do you use firewire? If not, dont install it, Firewire is ancient (Mac users use it I guess) I have firewire on my comp, I was wondering what those wires wrapped around my HDD were, its coming out so I can shread some heat! Cheers, Gunny

I have an Ipod so a firewire would free up a USB port and it would generally just be useful. :P

Firewire is ancient

I wouldn't say that. Most digicams at the moment use firewire for connection to PCs. At around 400mb/s it's nearly as fast as USB2.0, and waaay faster than USB 1.1.

Free up a USB port? Since I've upgraded my pc, I'm spoilt for choice for the damn things!  ;D

As for the front panel, assuming you bought that ECS Nforce4 A939 board, have you looked at the ECS Support Page ?

Failing that, what board did you get? (Make, model etc)

The support page doesn't really tell me much more than the users guide. Cause obviously there wasn't much collaboration between the man who made my motherboard and the man who made my new pc tower because otherwise the lables on the wires would match those in the instructions. :P :-[

(Although in fairness to them, it probably does all make sense to someone who knows what their doing...)

if you have a usb and a firewire connector with the plug on it, look at the color coding and use that for your FP connection to the board, if you don't I can send a drawing.

give me a min, and ill post the image you need...

:)Ramos

**EDIT**

this is the image from my installiation manual for USB and firewire. now from your first post, you would've hooked up a firewire cable to a USB port. this should help.

now the stupid ting is that the IEEE1394 port and the USB port look nearly alike, due to that one pin is moved over.

i head to deal with this when building mine, because the case has 2 usb, and my mother board had an expansion slot extension for 2 usb and 2 firewire, i had to deal with all that.

and here's what you need. the motherboard most likely is not the same, but the jumpers are.

Turns out that the motherboard doesn't actually support firewire and I was labouring under the misapprehension that it could just go in a USB port. Live and learn. :D

Thanks for all your help anyway. ;)
