Got quite a bit to play with~ GPU: ATi Radeon X1800XL
                                             CPU: AMD X64 4000+

Im willing to spend~ GPU nVidia 6800GT
                                 CPU Intel Pentium 4 630

Money is getting tight~ GPU ATi Radeon X800
                                      CPU AMD X64 3600+

I can barely pay rent, let alone computer parts~
GPU: ATi Radeon X300
CPU: AMD X64 3000+

As you can see theres different levels of what you can get. Most of these are decent setups, that will give you good frames. The other thing we must know is if you have PCI Express or AGP. This will also grately affect the list.

Hello.
I'm in the "got quite a bit to play with" category right now.  Would you recommend one ATI Radeon X1800XL card or two NVIDIA GeForce 6800 XT cards?

What is the advantage of two cards?

Also, does the following sound like a good deal at around $2,000?
AMD ATHLON64 X2 4200+ CPU (2.2 GHz)
or AMD ATHLON 64 4000+ CPU (2.4 GHz);

1 MB RAM;
Choice of the two video card options mentioned above;
ViewSonic VX924 monitor;
160 GB Hard Drive (Western).

What brand motherboard would you recommend?

And Finally, What is your opinion of CyberPower, Inc.?

I would say an Asus SLi board, with the X64 4000+ insted of the X64 x2. Also A gig is fine, as long as you get good timings (2-2-2-5 or 2-3-3-6) however 2 is a fun amount to play with. As far as GPU goes, 2 GTs are nice, but the Ultras are soo much better On the harddrive ide say a 200GB as space is cheap (make sure its SATA. Their faster drives). And to answer your question about the single vs. duel. SLi splits the load of the graphics between the two cards, therefore haveing a "duel core" GPU and boosting your FPs x2. (single 7800GTX 3Dmark05 score 7856 ~ in SLi 15325) So if you want to go single the X1800 series cards are killing the 7800's, however as far as duel cards go, SLi is a much better technology.

Yeah, 1 Mb RAM.  I must have been thinking of the Magnavox Headstart 500 pc that I bought 15 years ago.  We've come a long way since then.

Anyway, this is the system I am looking for:
AMD ATHLON 64 4000+ CPU (2.4 GHz);
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 XT  video card;
1 Gb RAM;
ViewSonic VX924 monitor;
160 Gb Hard Drive.

Either $2,000 with the monitor or $1,500 without it.
If anyone knows of a good source for a new dream machine like that please let me know.  Thanks.

Edit: By looking up your wanted specs I came to about 1 to 1500 WITH monitor.... so looks like you could go for a little bit more if you wanted!

Things look good but I would buy a single core San Diego over a dual core unless you are the Uber Multitasker or something. I say this for a few reasons first is because they are cheaper for 320 bucks you can get AMD X2 3800 it has half the cash of the better cores. Now for 320 you can get a AMD 64 San Diego 4000 for 320. That core is the best you can buy before we head into the FX series. Now even the 3700 San Diego outperforms the 3800 X2 in games thats why i bought the 3700. Also the 3800 may clock 2.5 ghz or so is what I have been seeing. My 3700 his 2.8Ghz on air with 1.5 Volts, as you see the San Diegos are very impressive overclockers and I am confident a 4000 could hit over 3 ghz on water and 2.8 on air quite easy. the memory controller may allow you to run 2.7 Ghz at a 1:1 ratio so your ram is DDR600(if you have good ram).

If you want dual core get a more expensive one but I plan to move to dual core when AM2 comes and they are a bit more practical for my uses, by then these current ones will be not so good. If you have any interest in overclocking at all get a San Diego.

Also why are we looking at the 6800 series when he has some spending money. They do make 7800GTs now....
