Squeaky X45

Hi all, first time poster long time errr....reader.

Does anyone know how to stop a joystick sqeaking? it's really anoying. Also it seems to stick a bit, the joystick is probably 1 year old now.

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem, or if i'm abusing mine too much

Seriously, it's great stuff. Just be careful not to over-use it... a LIGHT MIST is all you need, don't soak stuff in it. All households should have a can of the stuff, it's truely a divine miracle. Only costs a few bucks for a can, last forever if you use it right (Repeat, do not soak stuff with it. A bit of mist will do). This should also help your sticking a bit.

The other option, if you have an exposed spring like Saitek joysticks do, is to lift the spring up and put a diny disk of cut felt or similar between the various pieces.

That sounds like the plan of attack for me.

I've got about 5 cans of that stuff lying around somewhere... Must remember "LIGHT MIST"

The last thing I want to do is take the thing appart.  :-/

On my x45 both the squeek and 'stick' were caused by friction between the spring 'shoe' and where it rides on the base 'ring' and joy handle 'stub.

Cleaning and light lube cures it (mostly). I use a non-petroleum lube (silicone or pledge) as I wasnt sure if petroleum might attack the plastic.

A slight inital stick is still there. Anchoring the base helps alot.

I've read where this 'stick' can be 'cured' by lightening (shortening) the spring but have not tried that myself.

I tried lubing the spring shoe on my X45. It worked for about a day of heavy use. Finally I got fed up an cut a turn and a half off the spring. Works like a champ now. Had to be REALLY careful though taking the handle apart to get to spring where I had better leverage with the metal snippers.

What exactly does the spring do?

Does it centre the joystick or make it stiff to move around, or both?

I'm worried that if i make the spring shorter the joystick might just flop around.

It does both of those jobs - so if you do decide to shorten the spring, make sure you don't cut it too short otherwise the stick won't stay centered.

On the plus side - that would make it very good at circling airports or search & rescue

Well since I DID cut my spring I would suggest not to cut more than 1 full turn off. I did one and a half and it's just enough to keep it upright and centered. Might be a little more than some people like though. Either way, as I've said before just be carefull if you take the handle apart. Actually the only reason to even take it apart is it makes it easier to take the section of spring you cut off the post.
