#1. I take it that this one is where you have to fiddle around with cables etc, and you need a 5.1 soundcard?

The second one -

Is 5.1 surround sound in a USB headset really good quality, e.g similar to a home one, or cinema quality?

I only have 2 ears, so I probably couldn't tell the difference.

So am I. I can't see it possible in a headset, the surround sound tracks are extracted from the source by a piece of electronics called a surround decoder. The individual surround channels are then amplified and fed to the appropriate speakers.

Whereas in a 5:1 setup you would have 5 sattilite speakers and 1 subwoofer.

If you ask me they are misleading you and all you would be getting is a expensive set of stereo headphones

I wouldnt know exactly how a 5.1 Headset would work, but I do have a stereo headset from like 30 years ago and with an adaptor I plugged it into a Digital CD player (portable) and it sounded like a theater.... I dunno how they do it but it makes it sound like stuff is all over the place :) I dunno about these new ones, but my old one does :) Hopes this can be of some help, Cheers, Gunny

Onboard sound is mostly 5.1 compatible, the new ones are 7.1 I think, no need for a extra card in many mainboards
