Dial-up data transfer....

Hello lads... ;D...!
Another of those fascinating questions which keep the curious amongst us awake at nights...>>>

I am one of the lucky? few who still uses dial-up to connect to the Internet.... ...!

So...
My question is...

After I dial my Service Provider's number on my computer, a stream of data is exchanged, which can be heard from my Modems's speaker......!

Now, is this data being sent from my computer to my ISP, or the other way round, from my ISP to my computer...?
And...
Does anyone know exactly what information this data contains...?

If Im not mistaken (Fozzer??) it is collecting your connection info, telling the IP who you are but then again it may also be scanning for porn but who knows it is one of them "top secret" things.

I hope a correct answer will be given becasue I to will now lose sleep pondering! LOL

The sound is code to make the connection, not exactly sure of the science, but it's always been like that, (although I believe it's now encrypted code), since the early days of the internet.

Hackers use to record the code and play it back over the phone network to gain access to computer and phone networks, that was kinda the first internet I think.

The modem is "handshaking" during the process........ that is, establishing and authorising the parameters of the connection being attempted, ............. I think.....

When you think of dial-up Internet service, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the strange sort of "R2-D2 in a blender" type chirping that the modem makes as it connects. This song is called the handshake protocol, and it is the first thing that bogs down the speed of dial-up Internet.

The handshake protocol, as the name implies, begins the conversation that allows data to be sent to and from your computer using the Internet. There are actually two separate handshakes that occur in this process. The first half is the modem initializing the Internet connection. We'll call that the modem handshake. The second part is the software handshake. That deals with authenticating the user's access to the ISP (Internet Service Provider). When your computer is chirping away, it is introducing itself to your ISP. High-speed dial-up providers can't do anything about the modem handshake, but they can speed up the software handshake. The standard software handshake goes something like this:

     ISP Server: John who?
     Your machine: John Smith.
     ISP Server: I know 32,422 John Smiths.

BTW, a similar handshake happens for DSL users with PPPoE. Its much faster and silent though.

The above very affluent Member, Paul, (Scania), is showing off with his high-speed, highly expensive, Broadband again...

For all us poor souls, with limited funds, south of Stoke-on-Trent, (down the A49), we have to use the much cheaper dial-up option, smile furiously, and think of England.... :'(...!

...anyway...;)...
The reason why I posted this query regarding data is because lately I have been dialling up my ISP's number but getting no data transfer between my computer and my ISP....total silence...!

I went through Uncle Bill's Windows trouble-shooter, as you do, and it suggested that I have a peek here...>>>

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems > Properties > Modem > Maximum Port Speed > (300-115,200).

For some reason my port speed defaulted to 115,200, (the fastest).
The trouble shooter suggested that this may be too fast for my ISP to respond to, and suggested that I first reduce the speed to 9,600, as a trial setting.
Then increase it until I get the fastest, reliable setting...!

It worked fine, I dial the number now and the data is immediately transferred, (handshake!), between the computers...!

...just like my old Sinclair Spectrum tape loading days......!

So there you go...fastest is not always the best...LOL...!!
...(As Jordan often whispers in my ear'ole)......!

Actually, dsl isn't expensive.

SBC yahoo offers dsl thats the same price as or in some places CHEAPER than dialup.
