New system (at last....)

Postby RollerBall » Wed Oct 05, 2005 6:32 am

For any denizens of this forum who are interested (especially the ones who reply without being rude  ;) ) this is what my new system is doing.

It's an AMD 64 3000+ (one that got damaged last Christmas and I recently repaired) in an Abit NF8 mobo, 1GB DDR333 (not 400) RAM and Gainward 6800LE with 3 (of the 4) pixel pipe sets and all of the shaders opened with RivaTuner. I've also lightly OCd the card using the Gainward tool from core 300 to 344 and memory from 700 to 833 (could still go a bit higher). I'm running with a Samsung 160GB ATA HD.

Performance is fine - working temp of the GC stays at around 67/68 deg which seems pretty cool to me and there are (at last) no stability problems. I've passed my old AMD 2600+ system on to my son now who (would you believe) isn't really into 3D games ( much prefers constantly messaging and texting all his mates) and although it uses the cheapie PCChips mobo I got a while ago to replace the original nForce board that was damaged by one of the graphics card I got along the way, he seems pretty happy with it.

My new system didn't cost a lot (my PC is mainly used for my business and FS is really secondary) but I'm quite pleased with it. I'm stuck with the 333 DDR for the time being (came out of my old system) and maybe I'll go to DDR 400 when I can justify it. Any guesses by how much that'll increase performance?

Wotcha Woozy - those are benchmarking progs that are used to test the speed of your graphics. The numbers are purely relative. Congo is the world's expert at setting graphics systems up for benchmarking - he gets phenominal scores out of his cards.

3DMark2001 isn't really an up-to-date test because it doesn't fully test DirectX 9 features - but bozos like Foz and me like it because the numbers look really impressive ( you know, in a childish sort of way

Congrats on the new rig Rollerball. I bet you like the new speed.

Out of interest, this is an old shot of my Nvidia TI4200's score on a 2600+, does anyone still remember those cards?

Image

I don't tweak the card for the testing, I tweak my system as a whole Rollerball. I run the tests at 3dmark's default settings. 1024x768x32 no AF or AA, performance (not high performance).

You'll probably see a decent performance increase with ddr400, but it will be limited by the 3000+ and chipset.

I just ran the following (first time for 2001 on this rig).

I ran it again at stock clockings and scored 19,300.
So the overclock was nearly a waste of time in this test.

My FX5900XT scored 16,340 on my nforce2 rig with a 2800+ in it.

Hi, thanks congo

Pity really that it's come out of a series of compromises. I already had the 3000+ cpu because I had written it off (at my cost!) last Christmas because of a stupid handling error. But I hung onto it and managed to repair the snapped pin. There you go, not my cpu of choice - couldn't afford (or justify) a 4000+ that I recently did for a client but something like the 3500 isn't that much more than the 3000.

The Abit NF8 mobo wasn't too expensive but at least it has got scope for a future cpu upgrade as and when. It's also got 2 SATA ports but, again, when I was having all those g/card problems recently I had to get a new HD that would work with my then mobo ie ATA. So I'm stuck with it for the time being.

Same goes for the RAM - I had 1.25GB in 3 slots in my last rig so I left 256MB for my son (he doesn't need it

In all but one case, (at stock speeds), I found that modern AMD based rigs run better when CPU/FSB/RAM speeds are in sync.

Your cpu runs at 200mhz, (DDR400) or at least it should be.

Not only do you get a boost from the faster ram. you get a "sync" boost because the cpu doesn't have to translate the speed differences of the different buses. You may find you can tweak the ram timings a bit tighter as well, not sure.

That reduces latency and increases pc bandwidth.

If your DDR333 is high quality, You may be able to run it at 400mhz if you manually lower the timings and turn  spd configuration off. But be prepared to use the reset jumper on the mobo in case it doesn't work.   8)
