solved my 5900 ultra problem

Postby Steve_Butka » Wed Sep 21, 2005 7:12 pm

By saying "Go to hell NVidia" and ordering an ATi Radeon 9800Pro through my school (tax exempt ;D).

From what i was able to do with my nvidia, which was basically fly thedefault cessna around, a 256 meg card is definitely in my future.  After the holidays, which is usually when I make my killing as far as monetary funding is concerned, I will probably go for the x800.  Then we'll be allll good, and I'll finally end my reign of losing screenshot contests.  :)

For the price of a 9800 Pro, you could have bought a 6600gt which is way more powerful. (At least when comparing prices on newegg.com)

But your right, the 5XXX series was one of the worst gfx cards to ever touch the market. Thats why nvidia dropped the FX suffix for its Geforce 6XXX series.

The 9800pro is a slightly better card anyway, it should do for a while.

I have it up on ebay for a cheap price if you're interested

Autopilot that's not quite right. The 5900's were near the top of the charts for a long time. and are still what most would call a mid-range card.

Flight simulator isn't a true dx9 game.

See a doom 3 or half life 2 benchmark and you'll see just how sucky the geforce 5XXX series is. In fact, its so sucky in half life 2, that valve the developer actually defualted the 5XXX cards to run in dx8.1 mode because even the 5950 ultra could not handle dx9 at decent resolutions and quality settings.

A midrange card today is the 6600 GT.
