If you want to transfer data, nothing beats using a memory stick.

If you want to do lan gaming, buy a 4 port router.  You can pick one of those up for as little as $30

Also have a look at USB-to-USB data cables for large amounts of data 5GB+. I've got the Trust one, which can be used for both 280Mbps data transfer and also networking two (though only two) computers.

A 4-port router is unnecessary.

Get a 4-port switch with a router built-in. This is the best way to transfer data and play games.

USB p2p connections are toublesome and often don't work or don't work properly.

To transfer data just rip the hard drive out and attach it as a slave to the PC you want the data copied to.

What you want is a "network" and it requires a cable in it's simplest form, providing you have onboard networking (LAN) cards built into your mainboards. LAN cards that fit into the PCI expansion slots are exceptionally cheap to buy, (they may already be fitted),  then you can network the PC's together. There is no

Make sure the cable used is crossover cable or else you will need a hub to connect the two comps together.

Use a crossover cable to connect two PC's directly. If you going through a switch, use 2 straightthrough cables.

Benefits of a switch w/router:
-Easy setup
-expandability
-share internet
-play networked games (commonly called internet gaming like counterstrike)

Id get the USB to USB. If all you want to do is transfer data I myself would not be able to justify dropping 50$ for something I use once a year. No I will use USB or crossover cable for about 2$

Yeah, but he also wants to play computer games over a LAN which you need a switch for.
