Do You Overclock?

No, I don't overclock..... I don't think I need to to run FS2004 or CFS2 with what I have now.

P4 670 (3.8GHz) CPU
(Just switched from a 570J to the 670 yesterday. Wanted to see if the extra 1MB of Line 2 cache would make any difference. It did in 3DMark05 - up to 7927 from 7805 and PCMark05 - up to 5395 from 5118.)

74GB Raptor HDD
(Have another on order - I'm going to go to RAID 0 and see what difference that makes.)

2 X 512MB DDR2 RAM @ 533MHz
(Have 2 X 1GB modules ordered just to see if more RAM will make a difference. Will try 2GB first and if that helps I'll try 3GB.)

Without water cooling or something more extreme, I wouldn't even try to overclock your P4. Too stinkin' hot already!

I don't know why you all think overclocking will "cook" "kill" "set it on fire" to your hardware. If you are not patient and pop a 2 Ghz chip up to 2.6Ghz withought any thought then youu might fry something. If you put 2 volts in a venice you might fry something. Now if I do it the right way watch my temps watch stability you are a ok. Overclocking can save you money unless its your hobby like mine where you spend 100$ on cooling instead of just buyin the next best. But when I get my 3700 San Diego for 300$ running at 2.2 Ghz ppl say it will hit 2.6-2.7 on air thats as fast as an FX-57 only difference is 1. price, 2 Memory controller 3 unlocked multi and 4 higher Bin I dont much care for any of those so IMHO im saving lots.

Now a little on bining... a Speed Bin is a test they do at the plant. Chips come in platers each plater will contain an array of chips(all based on one core). Now due to how intricut each chip is they can never be the same. So when they get each chip cut and put in a cpu they test it or Speed Bin it, basically test how fast it will go and how well it performs, the slower chips get the lower mark such as 3000+ the better performing chips get a higher mark such as 4000+ so in essance your cpu was overclocked before it even got in the box. So this is why overclocking is possible, I pick up a 3000+ that was bined for 3000, thats AMDs fail safe bin where they are 99.9% sure it will not fk up. That chip still has more in it and with more voltage those Mhz can skyrocket so my 200$ 3000 end up being a 350$ 3500 in a mater of days.

Worried about shortening your cpus life span? Well a stock cpu will run probably longer than you if kept in a good environment. A moderatly overclocked cpu will last 10-4 years, I sure as hell am not using THIS cpu for 10 years overclocked or not. A highly overclocked maxed out 1.8 Vcore 2.8Ghz Venice will last about 3 years most people willing to push it that far dont plan on having that chip for more than 6 months..(because better come out not because they fried it)

So if you overclock as far as you can on stock voltage I am 99.9% sure you don't do anything, it just wont go high enugh to make the grade for the next speed level at AMDs rated voltage.

I know probably a mouth full but overclocking is not as dangerous as it seems.

Same here, pretty much me. Of course, I'm doing this under subzero temp's, so frying my CPU is impossible.

I've never fried a component in direct relation to overclocking. I've overclocked from a Pentium 100 to my current A64 3000+.

I don't overclock because I always have cooling problems and overclocking generates more heat.

The only overclocked thing in my PC is my Video Card...the BFG Tech 6800GT 256MB....

I am extremley disapointed in my 6800 Ultra BFG OC. Decided to see where she would go I could barley get 1.2Ghz Memory and 448Mhz core. Very dspointed but now I see why the Ultra Extreme eitions memory clcoks stay at 1.1 Ghz, because with any memory hike at all it hardly hits 448 on the core. So to make it work I think they needed to keep memory low just my speculation. It could be my PSU, 430W Antec True power on 2 HDDs, OC CPU, 6800 U etc etc, 2.8V memory, cant expect uch more out of her eh? I will get a new one ASAP once I recouperate from my 7800GTX purchase

From what people in the know tell me, and they know, the BFG 6800Ultra extreme is effectively a 6800GT Overclocked.

Most 6800GT's exceed ultra levels by a country mile, yet, BFG cards, so my knowlegable mate informs me, don't like to overclock much at all.

Relax, your 7800 won't dissapoint.  ;)
