Hard Drive Led Problems with New Motherboard

Postby Selbio » Sat Aug 13, 2005 12:57 am

A couple of days ago I got a Gigabyte GA-K8VM800M and I have noticed that the Hard drive light on the case has blinked maybe one time and now it stays on permanently.
Could that be the motherboard shorting out?
Other hardware,
AMD Sempron 2800
1024 PC 2700
160GB Seagate Barracuda
Onboard sound
350W Vantec Ion2 P.S.
Here is the motherboard link

http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboar...GA-K8VM800M.htm

Thanks in advance
Best Regards,
Selby

Most likely you have wired the HDD LED incorrectly with the case wiring, check the pinout.

If you smell something burny and horribly wrong, then I guess it might be shorting out  ;D

Probably the 'ATX-Mode' led instead of the HD led connector

What's an "ATX Mode" LED ? You mean the power LED?

Hi Selbio...!
The HDD LED plug is a 2-pin plug...
Have you plugged it in the correct way round. (LED's are polarised: Positive/Negative. They only work the correct way round.
Note the wire colours on the plug, and the + and - markings on the socket...
...try that...

Cheers...

Paul... 8)...!

You "HDD Active LED" plug should be wired to pins 1-3 and nothing else......not 2-1, and not  2-4.....

Tried it the other way around and the light did not com on at all. I have had bad luck with Gigabyte in the past, could it be the board that's defective?

...is there any chance that your HDD is actually running all the time... ::)...?

Paul.

Note below, my board is a Gigabyte GA-7 VT 600.

Works fine..!

Well,

I don' here it loading anything and it is a loud one.

On top of that the light comes on as soon as the pc comes on, normally it should come on after POST right? which is when the hard drive starts to spin?
But this one is on along with the power led.

Ahhh Haaa...!

You have another problem, which I have had in the past...

The computer locks-up during POST.
It was worse on Win '98. but I occasionally get the prob with Win XP.
I generally have to shut the 'puter down....wait for a while...then re-start it again.....

I know exactly what you mean now... ;)...!
The light stays on and the 'puter doesn't boot into Windows... :'(...!

Cheers ....

Paul.

P.S. Have you installed all the Motherboard drivers from the CD which you got with the new Motherboard...?

Oh no the computer goes to windows normally but the light stay on even if there is no hard drive activity.

I'm about to flash the BIOS but I have a question.

What is the Clear DMI Data Pool and the Clear  PNP Pool?

SHould I check those two before I flash the BIOS?
