Re: network two PCs

Get two 10/100mbit Ethernet LAN cards and hook them up.  Instructions come with the cards.  Use the XP machine as the "server" (main machine) and the 98 machine as one of the nodes.

It is surprisingly simple.  Want to make it even easier... get XP on the other machine too....it's a snap then.

Wired network cards are about $10 around here.... or sometimes even cheaper on sale... in the $7.00 range.

It's extremely easy with two network cards and a crossover cable. Just plug them in and the wizards can do the rest of the work...very cheap aswell.

Be sure to name your WORKGROUP the same on both computers! I think Win98 names it something other than the defaul WinXP 'MSHOME'. I would change both of them to something original.

I think I managed to change the workgroup name, by seting up network again on both.

Unfortunately the re is still NO "My Network Places" to click on and join the network with the win98 PC.

Anything else ?.

Networking is very simple.

Get a switch and hook your computers up to the switch with cat5 or cat5e straight-though cables. Make sure both computers have the same workgroup and bam your done, no other config necessary. A switch is very cheap these days and works much better than using a crossover cable in a peer to peer connection.

Personally, I'd get a router with a built-in switch (which is also cheap). That way, you can connect your router's WAN connection to your ISP's border router. This allows you to have a fast lan and share your internet connection much faster than using a host pc to 'distribute' connections.

Resources allowed just the two Ethenet cards + cable.

The second PC will not take winXP.

The winXP PC reports connection to the other.

All it seems needed now is to find why "My Network Places" does not appear on the win98 one, so that I can click on it and network the winXP PC.

JBaymore says he done it, I wish he reads this and pinpoint my difficulty.                luke

I haven't used win98 in years, but isn't there supposed to be a my network places icon on the desktop?

This one shows only "Network Neighbourhoods".

I found it and made show on the desktop with TweakUI.

BUT when I doubleclick it it only opens the win explorer to "entire network" and a couple of network names I must have made.

It does nothing to join or see the other PC.

As I have not seen networking operating, do'nt know what I am looking for really.

On the winXP PC, when i click on the "Local Area Connection" icon, the Local Area Connection Status comes up showing connection to, presumably the other PC via the cable between them, at Sent 34,472 bytes & receive 4,008 bytes.

BUT how can I get on the winXP's Broadband via the other PC?     That is the question?             luke

On Win'98, the icon is somewhere simple where you wouldn't expect it, that's all I can remember, sry.

Have you tried right clicking on the network neighborhood icon and selecting properties from the drop down menu?

If you get a networking icon in the system tray, (quick launch toolbar), try right clicking and going to it's properties, I think it takes you to that folder,
