Help me...

Postby Jakemaster » Thu Jun 23, 2005 4:36 pm

Okay, my computer has been messed up lately.  I have gotten at least 3 Windows errors a day (you know, blue screen).  I can't figure out whats wrong.  I tried the microsoft support site, but none of their help addresses my problem.

My real question is this:  I'm currently running on ME, would upgrading to XP help solve the problem?

On a different topic, is the Celeron processor more powerful than a Pentium III processor.  I have a pentium three, but this person I know is offering me their computer which is pretty weak (64mb RAM, small hard drive) for 50 bucks.  It has a celeron, and I can easily upgrade the ram (its the same as in my pc, so I can just transfer) as well as the graphics card, but it wouldn't really help if the processor is weak.

If you can afford 50, then get it. Its spare parts and you can tweak it. A celeron is the same as a Pentium, but without a cache. Its slower. Sorry I don't haev time to elaborate right now!

Depends on what type of celoron it is. Newer celoreans can be more powerful than Pentium 3 or not. Could you give a model nubmer?

I personally hate celoreans because they are diet processors in that they're performence is tweaked (for worse) by removng half the cache (i believe) of its counterpart Pentium processor.

As for upgrading to XP, definitely. ME is known to has performence issues as well it is possibly the worst OS MS has ever released while XP can be argued as one of their best.

A 1.8ghz Pentium 4 will absolutely trounce a Celeron 2.4!

The later Celerons are fair, but, a Sct 478 Northwood P4 walks all over it in every respect.

I know this, I own, in order of slowest to fastest, a 1.7ghz Celeron,P3  667 ,P3 800, 2.4ghz Celeron, 1.8p4 & 2.6p4.

I've benchmarked them all!  ;D I need a life......  :-/ :-[ ;D

Thanks!  I don't really need the parts, so I'm probably just gonna upgrade to XP, since ME sux.  Also, would getting a new hard drive help.  The one I have now is old (I had it long before I started playing fs) and has like 10 GB of memory left.

In case you were wondering, my specs are this:  512MB RAM, Pentium III processor 733MHz, Nvidia GeForce MX 4000 graphics card

Depends, if your HD is old enough to spin a 5200 rpm or less. Definitely upgrade. You will see a gain in performence

If you need more space, definitely upgrade. A crowded HD isn't all that good for performence. (10 gigs is generally considered uncrowded for the average person)

If your current HD is a 7200 rpm and you have planty of space left (which you do), upgrading to a new HD will probably not increase your performence.

Though it also really depends on what you upgrade to, if you upgrade to a WD raptor which purrs at 10000 rpm, you'll see a performence gain.

If you really want to up your performence, I'd get a new video card. Any performence gain from a new vid card would be much greater than any from a HD upgrade.
