Just dive on in, after all, I might be able to fix it myself.

Why bother to ask first, right? I mean the problem is obvious!

Why wait for all the bother and fuss of the warranty regime? The transport alone makes it too expensive to ship a monitor all over the country for repair.

Ooooh! I never saw one like this before, fancy all that protection to keep meddling hands away from the machines inner workings!

Not daunted in the slightest, I work on.

AH HA! There's the problem, the switch is broken, and my, what fine little brassy bits on it...... I get it! It's a sensor switch, must be a low voltage trip thingy right? I mean the mains 240 volts would surely melt that little lot.

I wonder if I can just hotwire the thing, I mean, I could just turn it on and off at the wall...... yeah! That's what I'll do!

Better test it

Well, Jimbo,

We have huge fines here to deter any non-qualified electricians form making repairs to mains voltage equipment.

But, fortunately, there is no law against me actually attempting to fry MYSELF with 240 volts.

Don't try this at home kids.

Just be glad you didn't apply the wet finger test.

A friend of mine, checking a fault on some extremely powerful radio equipment, placed his sweaty finger into an apature in the back cover. He pulled it out rather fast after gaining a pin sized hole right through the fingertip. He reckoned the jolt was extremely large and he was glad that he was on rubber matting with rubber soled shoes on.  ::) ::) ::)

What fun!! I once got a nice shot of 220 from an old freight elevator operating handle (shorted on me)- I saw a blinding flash of light, and just as I noticed we'd stopped and my hand was off the handle, the other two guys were asking me if I was OK. "Huh?" I asked.
"Dude, you just jumped about two feet in the air and let go of the handle!! Didja get a shock? You okay??"
I was fine. no burn, no pain, and I actually found it rather refreshing. Good thing I wasn't properly grounded... ;D
By contrast, I once brushed an open mains panel with my elbow while working, and it burned me and damn near knocked me off a ladder. Don't remember the voltage, but it hurt like hell.

LOL! I know how it is, I've got a fan in my p/s that acts up every once in awhile...to get to it I've got to rip the whole thing apart, which basically means I'm buying a new one...usually does it in colder days so hopefully there will be warmer days ahead.. ;)

220v only gives large sparks if you have lots of amps to handle (which the usual CRT does).
even 12V @ 18A gives 1,5-2cm sparks if you short-circuit

By-the-by: impulse switches don't like to be holded in place

a few years back, a guy in my year level, told me to touch a fence, nothing happened, he then told me to hold it with 2 hands for 10seconds.
ZZZZZZZZZZAAAPPPPPP'
didnt hurt, just rather shacken after it though, it didnt hurt one bit.
I wasnt shore on how many volts it was.
A 9volt battery is pretty powerful,i was holding a 9volt battery and sicors in one hand.
ZZAAPP, sent pain right up my arm, and
it was worse than a electric fence!!!
