'Error loading signature from XML'?????

Hi,

Is there anybody here who knows what this means, if I try to open Windows Explorer I get a box that says this:

'Failed assertion in Common.cpp at line 168'
'Error loading signature XML from 'Sigs.xml'

Then all of my shortcuts disappear & the only way I can shut down my pc is to switch it off with the switch on the 'tower'.

If anybody knows how I can fix this it would be a great help. I've tried a system restore to a time when it wasn't happening but the problem still remains.

PS: I'm running a Dell Dimension 5000.

I know this probably isn't the answer your after, but I (And more people all the time) use Mozilla Firefox. I have the e-mail client too, and they are very high quality, and almost totally error free - not to mention FASTER!

As for your question, no idea!!

Neurragh.... Now who feels an idiot!  :-[  :D Hwever, Mozilla can be used as a local file explorer too - wouldn't reccomend it mind!

ha ha - no worries. I just had a really surreal moment when I realised what you were talking about, you should've seen me run back to the pc hahahahaha.

I take it you have done all the usual checks ...... virus etc.

I take it you're running XP ....... have you tried reparing the installation.

Have you tried the Dell support centre ........ they actually are quite good  and will respond very quickly with any help requests.

Firstly, yes I am running Windows XP.

I had thought about doing a non-destructive recovery (or if that failed, a destructive recovery), although I tried the 'system restore' first.

To do an XP repair ...... put your XP CD in and when it autoruns it gives you the option to repair the installation. It isn't a system restore. As far as I know, but don't quote me, it keeps all your settings and just fixes what needs fixing.

It might be an idea to check the M$ help and support centre too.
