Hiya all.....can anyone help please?

is there any way of permanently deleting temporary internet files from your hard drive.  ??? I am using xp home edition.

Clean out the temp internet folder everyday.  Everytime you use the internet it will fill back up.

maybe didnt explain properly....i need to permanently remove the internet files from my hard drive, although emptying the temp internet folder gets rid of the files, with certain programs they can still be found on your hard drive, i think somewhere i have heard of shredding the files but cannot remember where!

When windows deletes soemthing, it simply marks the space on the hd as overwritable.

To truly delete something, the space where the file to be deleted occupies need to be written over with random strings of charactors. each time the space is written over is called a pass. it takes about 4 passes for it to be truly gone, and veen then determined investigators with $20000 hardware and software can still read it. 8 passes will render any software data anaylsis tool useless, but still be read with special bomputers. At 16 passes, that file is gone. Only a determined team of FBI agents or similar with government mainframes can get to it.

each pass uses a different kind of standard. The two most popular are:
-Guttman standard, which requires that the file be overwritten 35 times with pseudorandom data.
-The other is published by the Department of Defense, Manual 5220.22 M. This requires that the file be overwritten with 0's, then 1's, and then random data; and further stipulates that, for top secret data, the disk on which the file is written must be deguassed, and then destroyed.

Generally, the guttman standard is used. (Most people can't afford to conform to the DOD standard). There are many softwares that claim to us this method, but be careful. I highly recommend pgp personal which comes with pgpdisk which can perform data wipes and are highly effective at truly deleteing data. PGPdisk even has a option of free disk space wipe, which will destroy all data that has been deleted before (i.e. simply marked for overwrite). This is a good application for you as you can clean out your temp internet folder with disk cleanup (a windows utlity) and then do a free space wipe. PGPdisk also supports up to 28 passes which is insanely good.

thanks for your reply - sorry for my lateness in reading it as i got waylaid flying. it seems a pretty complicated business deleting stuff. i will look at pgp and maybe purchase if viable.

Hello-Even if you delete your temporary internet files, the "index.dat" file retains your browsing history can become a rather large file. This file cannot be altered through Windows.
I've used the free program IE Privacy Keeper - http://www.unhsolutions.net/IEPK/index.shtml - with good results to clean up my temporary internet files, including the "index.dat" file.

I've been using Firefox for my internet browser for a couple months now, I like it more and more. You might want to give it a try if you get tired of IE6. You can have both browsers installed at the same time, no problem.

If you have Norton antivirus 2K5 you can shred files so that the average joe can't read them or recover them with any consumer tools. I don't think you have to worry about the FBI or the like, unless you are really naughty.

But nortain does not use methods. It simply overides the data with data from somewhere else.

I could retrieve any file nortan claims to have erased easily and within reasonable time (the actual time depends on the size of the file). And I would be using FREE software off the internet thats easily downloadable. And the fact that I used the software would also be hidden as the software boots from cd with no actual changes to the hd.

Of course, I have industrail grade media desantitation hardware that can override even the guttman standard given enough time.
