ati or nvidia?

Postby imchief » Mon Jan 31, 2005 6:47 pm

all right.  please be honest and not biased.  I am getting a new video card but am indecisive on which one is better.  I have always had nvidia cards but i just want the best card for my money.  I am going to spend around 150 or less.  I would probable look at the 9800 or the GF 6600 or the gf 5700.  all of them i am looking at are 128mb cards.  I am really out of the loop now days on what the video cards do now days.  Any help would be great.  Please, be honest and not biased toward ati or nvidia.

thanks

joe

Basically out of the 3 cards you just mentioned go for the 6600 make sure it is a GT, if not then go for the 9800Pro.

I would also recomend the 9800pro.

I also used to get nothing but nVidia cards.
However when I got my 9800 pro, I was completely won over by ATI.

I'm now running an ATI X800 pro

Interesting review, just about every game tested runs better with the 6600GT except FS9 !  ::)

So, if you play FS9 and nothing else, then indeed a 9800 is the card for your money, I'd personally go for the 6600GT and reap rewards when fragging etc.

Series my friend you are totally mistaken!

You only looked at the benches with no Anti-Aliasing!

Go to the page after the 6600GT whoops the 9800pro when AA and AF is turned on!  ;D

And after all you deffo want to be playing with AA and AF turned on  8)

ATI is great for single card solutions generally.

Their X800 line can't be beat for price and performence.

Nvidia's generally good for SLI. A dual 6600 gt setup is less exspensive than a x850 xt and performs about the same.

Well, first off you mentioned you were only planning to spend $150 or less.  My friend, you won't be able to touch any of the aforementioned solutions for so little cash.  Now, if you are willing to increase by $100 you might be able to get a 9600 XT or the new agp 6600 GT.  for $150 more in your budget you could go 9800 Pro or 6800.  As is, the best bet for what you are currently willing to spend would be a mid-level 5000 series nvidia.  There are some decent overclocked 5700 models out there in your price range.  I recommend you stay away from the early 9 series ati radeons.  Actually, the only radeon solution that would better the 5700 would be a 9600 card and they are still in the $240 range in most stores though you may find deals through new egg.com.
