New Card Ordered

Postby GunnerMan » Tue Dec 28, 2004 11:23 am

Well I decided to go with the BFG 6800Ultr as I think correct me if I am wrong the memory will go farther in an OC than the core so im kia hoppin for 450/1200...I got Next day deliverey cus I want it so much so it should be here tomorrow or the next day ;D...My system is waiting....AMD64 2.0 Ghz clocked at 2.26 and RAM at just under DDR333 with a latencye of 2.5-3-3-6 8) HHopefully I can push 2.4 Ghz stable out of the CPU 8) ???

Well she wont go any higher than 2.3 Ghz, It must be the ram becaus when I try to go over it I can get as far as BIOS thats all, then I though if I OCd the RAM  a bit more it would run so I booted and windows said it was missing a file, so I reboot with win cd to get the missing fie and it didint give the mising file error but about half way through windows load it would rebot it self then when I went into BIOS the KB would quit working after a few seconds so I had to clear the CMOS, so I guess I will leave it at 2.2-2.26 untill I can get some decent RAM.. >:(

Its more than likely your ram thats causing the problem.

When you buy some ram go for PC4000 or somthing!  That way you will be able to overclock your CPU easily.

I managed to get my CPU running at 2.6Ghz on air fine but had to differ the ram speed to the CPU speed so it ran slow.  But it proved that my CPU will clock pretty well.  I have since returned my CPU to default and my ram is default clock speeds (400Mhz)  I am gonna have to wait until I get some higher speed ram to get higher clock speeds.  Shame my CPU only has 512k L2 cache though, 1mb woulda been nice.

Well your CPU's multyplier will be locked so the only way you can overclock is by altering the FSB.  Some rams dont mind their FSB raised a bit but you have to slacken the timings which you dont really wanna do.

To get over this you purchase ram with a higher FSB (PC4000)  Now when you turn it on it will de-clock the ram and it will be running at PC3200 speeds!!   The thing now is you can up your FSB knowing the ram can handle it due to it being rated at a higher FSB.  You should also be able to achieve tighter ram timings too which will make the ram work better/faster.

Ahh I see thats good thinkin so if I bought ....now is there a way to unlock the CPU ??? I know some CPUs do and some dont but if I bought PC 4500(if i got the cash) I should be able to OC the CPU with little to no RAM speed decrease? I am not afraid to spend money on RAM as it will last me a lot longer than anything else because AMD has no plans to go to DDR2 so if I got some good PC4500(if its worth the price/performance) it should last me well into my next system... Thaks for the info Gixer ;D ;D

Be careful going to high! some mobo's get a bit funny with really high speed stuff even though it does de-clock it.  PC4000 (500FSB I think)  is more than enough I would say at the moment.

Unlocking CPU's requires you to make alterations to your CPU by means of soldering usually or somthing similar!  There is no way I am gonna get anywhere near my CPU with a soldering iron or anything in matter of fact.  I am just gonna get me some PC4000 which will enable me to set somthing like 250*10 which will give me 2.5Ghz and a nice high FSB.  High FSB is good! makes things work faster.  If you bench and just raise FSB you get quite noticeable effects!  If you have an A64 dont forget to lower th HT value too.  Mine is at present HT=5.  You are aiming to mulitply your HT by your FSB and it to equal 1000.  Thus my FSB is 200*5=1000.  With it set to 250 I would want HT to be 4,   250*4=1000.  By all means try it with a higher number, i.e. 5 as if that does work it should theoretically be quicker, but if you get unstability drop it to 4.

We got AMD's  ;D  I thought the AMD's were locked on the CPU not on the mobo? Like your FX55, its unlocked.  If I put it into my mobo I would be able to make the multyplier higher  8) at present I can only adjust the multyplier lower  :'(

Your talking about HTT.  There is a difference between HTT and HT.   HTT = FSB basically on the A64 mobos.  There will be an HT value somewhere in your BIOS I woulda thought, there is on mine!
