transferring files to another hard drive

Postby farmerdave » Thu Dec 23, 2004 9:09 pm

Does anyone know of anyway to transfer files from one computer to another?   We just got a new computer, and I would like to transfer my addons from CFS to the new computer so I don't have to download them all again.  My dad said he saw some kind of software in PC World that could do that, but i can't find it on line.   Any ideas?

I know of a couple of ways that I have done it in the past, 1) You can save everything you want to transfer to a CD-ROM and move it over that way, this is good also because you have your stuff saved to a disc in case of a disaster, 2) You can remove the hard drive from computer A and install it in computer B as a temporary slave drive while you move the files you want to the master drive, or the most recent method I have used is 3) Buy an external USB hard drive, of course both PC's need to have USB ports for this to work, but I have found this to be the easiest method so far to move stuff from one PC to another.
You could also network the two PC's together and transfer files that way.

I think I did read about some software that moves contents of one PC to another but I don't know anything about it and really don't see why it would be necessary, maybe someone else here knows more about it or can suggest other methods to transfer files.
Good luck and congrats on the new machine!

Are you running XP on both? If so XP has a built in file transfer program, not sure how well it works, but it is there....

Do you have a LAN Card in both pc's? How about a LAN setup? if you have lan cards in both pc's but no LAN setup you could buy a crossover cable (Around 15USD) and connect the pc's together this way.

My most likely method would be to swap the drives out for a few hours and copy and paste etc...

The fastest way is to remove the old h-drive and place it in the new computer as a slave drive. I just bought a new dell 8400 and had to do it this way because I had so many files to transfere, and any other way would have taken me forever. Plus my old computer only had a floppy drive which is almost non-exsistent now. Good Luck. CP
