Defragmenting

Postby Saitek » Mon Nov 29, 2004 6:17 am

Does this benefit me and the sim. ???
My Dad didn't think it did anything really.
Here are the results... do you think it'll help?
The other drives were so small, and they onlytook a few minutes to defragment.
This is the first time I believe in years I have done this and they say to do it regular.
After I had done it... it still said it needed doing. ???
I re-did it another 5 times. Each time it did it much quicker. The first time toook ages. ::)

I'd like some feedback here - as I'm pretty ignorant. :)
Thanks,
BEn :)

The way to check is to click on the defrag tool's ANALYISE button .... every 3-4 weeks and it'll tell you wether you need to.

Well it still says it needs doing. I've done it 5 times... it now takes only a minute - but the colour code bar seems to imply it

From the look of it...alot of your HD is still fragmented......

I been getting the same problem...my PC refuses to defragment my 'C:\' drive...the 'E:\' drive defragments just fine...

Image

If it defraged correctly, it should look some thing like this ^^^

*Thats how it looked 30 seconds before it was defragmented again ;) ;D*

One really intreasting that I seen with this stuff is that once I got really bored ::) and was just stareing at the thing.......and suddently a green bar jumped from the left side of the thing and onto the right side ::)

Jeff

P.S. I dare not post a shot of my 'C:\' drive............I might start a angry mob ;D

Are you running XP?

If so then I'll find the registry edit that gives you a right clickl defrag option on the menu.

It runs a defrag in a DOS type configuration and may solve your problem.

It may be later today .......... Ive got to find the relevent magazine.

"WATCH THIS SPACE"

OK Gents here it is.

Start/ Run/ regedit

then locate.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\drive\shell

Right click on shell and select new key and name it Defrag

Right click on defrag and create another  new key anc call it  Command

Modify the Default value in the right pane and change it to DEFRAG.EXE %1

Close up regedit and Bobs ya aunt. You should have a right click defrag option on  your hard drives.

I don't understand the last two things.... can you explain?
Do I right click that weird REG_SZ which comes up with edit string and whack in DEFRAG.EXE %1 ?
Then close it up? You mean just click it off?

If you kept it de-fragged from the word go you wouldn't have the problem with moving the fragmented files.

I de-frag my HDD after installing anything or removing anything (Program wise)  If I do not add/remove progs then I do it weekly due to clearig out temp dirs etc.
