Simple answer, what ever you can afford. Get the higest you can afford to get. I've found that FS will run fine on any system 800mhz and above.

For your second question. Microsoft hasn't announced FS2006 yet but it's probably in the works and will probably come out late 2005. There is no FS2005 because Microsoft only releases a new version every two years.

Coolamon,

Personally, I would not recommend anything less than a 2 GigHz machine to even TRY to fly fs2004 on.  Even with a 2.4 gig cpu, a gig of RAM, and a good video card I am far from able to realize the stuff that is "packed into" that simulator and still get smooth and "flyable" framerates on short final.

If you are willing to buy the fs9 program and then turn off a lot of the nice new features you are buying...... you can certainly go lower with the cpu speed.  Of particular concern with a slow processor will be the AI traffic.

best,

What John says isn't entirely true. I ran FS2004 on medium settings with a 950mhz processor and an FX5200 video card. I got between 14-20fps. I only upgraded to a faster CPU so I could run more advanced addons more smoothly.

Iroquois,

I guess that the difference in opinion here is that I find anything less than 20 fps as unacceptable from a "flying" point of view.  Too "jerky" and unrealistic with a control lag.

20 fps is kinda the minimum for me.

All that to spend on a CPU? FX53 then (If you can get hold of one)  ;D  If you want FS9 to run looking its best then your gonna need the best!

My rig below runs my FS9 alright.  I am happy with my setup and have my sim looking great and hold above 20fps nearly everywhere now.  This is my minimum to, I have my FPS limited to 25fps.
