I always have my "Distance" setting at around 5-10 miles, which is pretty realistic when you are up in the air in a real aeroplane....

Anything beyond that is pretty fuzzy most of the time!
In real life, most airfields/airstrips can only be seen when you are almost on top of them...

...!
It also means that the program doesn't have to waste time and memory drawing un-necessary detailed scenery in the far distance!
That will often prevent "juddering" which the computer suffers when it has to load in large batches of detailed scenery from the hard drive while you are flying...
