question:..i would like to replace my power supply unit, but since i have an HP i'm told that you can only get a new one from HP, since off the shelf psu's wont fit, etc. right now  my psu is 250w...want to go to ay least 400w, due to all the upgrades made to my original unit...my specs; 2.6 cpu, radeon 9800xt 256, 2gig of ram and additional fan cooling.  why cant i somehow bypass the original 250w unit in the case with an external so i can use  after psu  any thoughts or info on this subject would be much appreciated.......keep em flyin

Can you take your old PSU out, take it to your local Computer Retail shop and ask their advice...?
The physical size, fixing holes and plugs have to exactly match your original PSU.. ;)...!
By the way, with my spec below, I had to get a 550Watt, dual fan, power supply for cool running, reliability and stability... :o...!

Cheers...!

Paul.

New cases with power-supplies aren't much more expensive than just a power-supply..

Go that route and just swap ALL the hardware over..
