CD Writer not working :(

Postby BFMF » Tue Nov 18, 2003 2:46 am

Before I upgraded my computer, I could burn all the cds I wanted without any problem, but now I can't. I either get an error stating that it's an illegal request, or I get a window telling me to place an empty disk in the drive.

I can use it as a cd-rom just fine, I just can't burn any cds.

I've made sure that it's installed as the master drive, with my regular cd-rom set as the slave drive.

Could someone please help me out, i'm out of ideas and I'm rapidly filling my hard drives up :-[

I've seen twice where the jumpers had to be set to

cable select, and the drives set on the IDE cable in the

correct order.

However, maybe it's a software problem.

I would try using a different burning program,

especially if this is a new drive. I prefer Nero software.

I just don't like using the CD burning util of WinXP.

Good luck

But i'll try your suggestion and see what happens

ok, I removed my regular cdrom, and tried having my cd writer on both cable select & master without any luck.

The drive is 3-4 years old, do you think it's due to hardware malfunction?

Any more ideas?

Thanks

Guys, I just finished testing the drive in another computer without a problem, which means it has to be a software problem on my computer.

I've tried everything I can think of.

Please help :(

Thanks

Was the other computer you tried it on similar to yours'?
(ie. modern) and was it using the same operating
system? Maybe the burner just isn't compatible with
your new rig.

Look at the bright side...... The new burners are a huge
improvement over the old junk, No more garbage cans
full of stuffed up discs and very fast burn speeds. I'm
using a cheap Sony Burner and it's awesome.

So, if it won't work, get a new one. You'll love it.

Sry, I just can't imagine why it won't work. You said it worked as a CD Rom drive so that rules out cable and mainboard probs...........

Is it possible the operating system has missing or corrupt neccesary files form when you did the upgrade?

Do you have the latest mainboard drivers and bios?
Though I wouldn't think a bios would have a glaring defect that would affect a burner.  ???

I wish I could be more help on this, if you resolve it, post your solution please.

The computer I tried it on was a totally different setup, I was just ruling out hardware failure.

I've got the latest mobo drivers installed, and it works fine as a CD Rom.

If there were missing or corrupt files in WinXP, is there a way to find out?

That's a question I'd like an answer to.

Win98 had a system file checker , but so far I haven't found one on XP.
