disable onboard vedio?

Postby jfg123 » Sat Oct 04, 2003 7:14 am

Dear sim people.

I want to shut off my current 64 Mb intergared vedio card and install a GE force AGP card. But my Bios only lists PCI and no disabled ways.

I have a MB810LR socket A, Motherborad, OS Xp Home edition. 1.3 Gig AMD Anthlon system built by Cybertron.
The mother broad has a AGP 4x empty slot on it.
I searched my Bios but could'nt find any way to disable the on board vedio.

Do you think I should mess with this stuff or just use the 64 mb shared vedio on FS 2004?
Thanks for your Help JG123

I can't seem to find any information about your motherboard. Who makes it?

As of right now I guess the only idea I can give you is to flash your BIOS. If you don't update it often then a newer version might have the option to disable the onboard video. Their has to be a way or they wouldn't have put that AGP slot on it.

I had an old board, can't even remember the make, but like your's, there was no set-up option to disable the on-board video... so I didn't.  I just installed the AGP card and (if I remember correctly) left it as an option never chosen when it came to display adapters. It was still there, just not used .

This was a PIII machine with WIN98, so it prob has no reference here.. just thought I'd mention it.

Turning off onboard video should be quite easy. You don't half to flash your BIOS or anything like that. The following is for an American Megatrends or Ambios BIOS chip but it should be the same for others.

When you start up, you should see a list of options on the first DOS screen, this is reguardless of what OS your using. It will be someting like Setup , Boot Menu , Network Boot , etc. Now enter setup, if it says delete hit the key with delete written on in, not backspace.

You should now see a menu of options. It should be under something called Advanced Options. In the following list your see an option called Onboard Video Enable/Disable. Swithch this to Disable. Save and exit. Simple as pie. Check the manuels that came for with computer. Check the motherboard manuel, it should give instructions on changing BIOS settings.

Be careful though as changing the wrong setting can mess up your machine and you may have to reset your BIOS chip. Under another menu you will see a setting to set your video card to the PCI or AGP port. Make sure you have it set to the correct port for maximum acceleration.

He said their was no option in his BIOS to disable onboard video which is precisly why I suggested to flash the BIOS. It may add that option.

It may be like Brett said too though. Just put the AGP card in and let  it go.

Thanks for all Your helps.

Found out that my PCChips MOther board will in fact automatically disable my onboard vedio and accept a AGP 4x card which Iam going to do, put in a FX 5200 when I save up the money on disablity payments.

Thanks hope this works.
