GeForce 5200 vs. 5900?

Postby ReverseThrust » Sat Aug 30, 2003 8:48 am

I am looking to buy a new pc and am wondering if I should pay the extra money to have the latest model, the GeForce FX5900, put in rather than the older and 'budget' FX5200.

??? ???

If you have the money, go for the FS5900! It's the best video card currently on the market and the only one to my knowledge that has 256mb of RAM.

The FX5200 is a good card. It has the power of the Ti 4200 but is half the cost and has DX9 compatability.

The Rig:
AMD Athlon XP2000+ Palomino, ECS K7S5A 3.1, 1GB PC2700 DDR, Geforce FX5200 128mb, SB Live P

If I had the option of specing a new pc, then the best possible card would be top priority! - alas I'm just a mere scumbag with little money, and thus, had to settle for a "middle of the road" card, namely the FX5600 - damn good it is too, despite my crappy Celeron cpu......

Boeingman, the outlay seems a little steep, possibly, but the extra for the FX5900 (an "Ultra" if possible ;) ) is more than worth the cash. - Comparing an FX5200 to an FX5900 is not even worth the bother, the FX5900 is simply the best GPU on the market.

orenda635, Ati have also produced a 256mb card, nearly as quick as the FX5900 quite a bit cheaper also...... - I'd still go for the Nvidia if money was'nt a problem.

Thanks for the input!  I ended up going with the FX5200 because it came standard on the PC I giot.  Got a great deal and a kick-butt machine!  1 Gig of RAM, Pentium 4, 120 Gig HD, etc.

I'm running a similar spec machine to Boeingman, and get decent results/framerates; having said which, I'm just waiting for the FX5900 to drop to a sensible price, then I might just have to consider a little upgrade!!   ;)
