Modem problem

 I am working on a computer that belongs to some older folks, they don't want to spend the money to upgrade so I am trying to fix their machine to get them by.
 The machine is a Packard Bell 233mhz pentium running Windows 95, this thing was a disaster when I started messing with it, even after a full restore there were tons of errors, I have corrected pretty much everything, however when I try to connect to the internet I get a blue screen error that reads: "modem is unable to save private data to the registry- error 1007" and then another one that says:"no alias defined for the modem com port-erro 1009"  when you run a diagnosis on the modem it says everything is okay.
 I have already put way more time into this machine than I think it's worth, but it was given to the in-laws so it was a freebie to begin with, they know absolutley nothing about computers but they know they want to be connected to the internet, how cool is that?
Actually I'd like to have this machine myself because I have a 100mhz Packard bell that I keep around and I could swap parts.
 This may not be the best website to post a question like this, but I figure maybe someone might have an idea how to correct this, I did find someone who posted the exact same question on a more technical related forum, the post was made in January, and they never got a reply, I emailed them to see if they ever fixed it on their machine.
 Any ideas will be appreciated and Thank you in advance.

I once reinstalled my operating system, Windows ME, and man did I have a nightmare.  Never could get connected to the internet. Turns out there were several things in the registry that had to be fixed. I had to call the manufacturer's support number and let them guide me through editing some things in the registry.

You probably would have been better off getting a new hard drive and just clean installing a better Operating System. But I bet you didn't think you would run into such a big mess!!    ;) Good luck bud. Wished I had an easy fix for ya.

 I finally got it working, and all I did was reinstall windows 95 without doing the whole reformat thing, I've done that twice now and both times came up with TONS of errors straight away! very odd.
 So after running a bunch of tests, I finally decided to reinstall win95 because of all the missing files and .dll's. but instead of doing the complete restore of the hard drive, to save time I just did the OS. Now everything is fine, I was cruising the web most of the day on that machine, now I need to find some upgrades for the browsers, it's got IE 2.3 or something pathetic like that, but it worked fine, and I figure these folks don't wanna spend any money on it and to them it's going to be a whole new world anyways.
 I also had to replace the cd-rom, but that was easy, I found the exact same drive on ebay for $10.00.
 I'll bet I have at least 20 hours into this piece of crap, wish I was getting paid by the hour!
 But I enjoy troubleshooting and working on PC's so it has been fun really, definitily one of the most challenging projects I've had so far in my many years of working on these things.
 And now, it's one fine running vintage piece of crap.

 I love working on computers as I mentioned in my second post, I'll work on any machine, I know that eventually I can find a solution for anything, but I don't guarantee how long it will take, and everything I know is only from years of experience.
I hope to someday make a living at this, I am set to start training for a degree in PC repair. Maybe once I get that piece of paper I'll be able to do this professionally, seeing as how I gave up on becoming a rock star a few years back.
