I seem to have the same problem. I was getting up to three hours defraging last night and it seemed to be stuck at 85% for one of thoes hours. I just gave up and cancelled it. I'd try and clean off that HD though.

Have you ran scan disk or disk cleaner to try and free up some space?  That helps out some because the more files, the more time to move them.  Also try to reboot the computer, turn off the screen saver (so it doesn't kick on and restart the defrag), and let it go.  Just turn off the monitor while it is working.  This way, there are less things to worry about such as temp files and such that can take more time.  Also, stay off the net, and shut down things like AIM, and virus programs that run in the background.  Basically, you just want the computer to defrag and nothing else.  Good luck if you go for an 8th try.

Turning off the monitor shouldn't really help the defrag process.  But with the screensaver turned off, it will help stop any shadowing if you do it regularly and takes a while.  Plus, because you don't need it for the time being, it will save on your electric bill a bit too.  Sorry I don't have any other suggestions though.

I noticed again that you were using almost all of your HD space.  Would it be possible to save things like your entire "My Documents" folder, added aircraft, and anything else you can easily move to a CD/DVD?  If you can move a few gigs off the HD, things might go a bit smoother.  If you have enough discs, I'd move everything I could to the HD except maybe games that you don't want to risk having to re-install.  I think I remember reading somewhere that the computer will use some of the extra HD space for the defrag, and you might not have enough extra for the amount of files you have.  And you shouldn't have to worry about putting the files back on fragmented.  When you move them to the disc(s), it acts kind of like a defrag anyway.

I had the same problem. Turns out my antivirus program just needed to be disabled during the process. If you have an antivirus program try disabling its autoprotect function if it has one or just close it during defrag.
