Just wondering what your favorite aircraft and tactics are when flying in either an air to air, or air to ground, combat scenario.

Mine fav AC would be the MiG9, against bombers, get on there 6, come in fast, aim for the engines and FIRE DAMN FIRE, then run away before then can get their MGs on you, and repeat :)

Ground attack....Fly right at the target, eject when at around 1000 feet... don't come in to hot....and let the plane hit the target with you (hope fully) floating down to earth ;)

Just starting out in IL-2, so I'm still getting the hang of it.

So far my favorite plane is the P-38, I've been practicing with the guns on large bomber flights.

I'll get a thousand feet above them. and line up behind and have them cross me slowly through my guns line of fire. Just as I start getting close enough to start taking lots of AA, I'll break off and line it up again.

My only tactic against ground targets that works is to dive on them, and pray I make it. ;D ;)

This game rules! 8-)

My favorite aircraft is the FW-190 D-9. It's fast, maneuverable and well armoured.

Bombers
When against bombers I go for a 'face smack'. This is where you dive towards oncoming bombers and shoot right into the canopy (which is usually glass, hence the weakest part of the aircraft. I would say this has a 95% success rate, but can take a little bit of time to perfect.

Fighters
When against fighters I normally get low (which many would argue is the wrong thing to do) by diving from 1000m to 150m. Usually, by the time i've hit 150m i'm going 460 mph. Using all this speed, I peel off, which usually results in me getting within firing range of my pursuers. This isn't as reliable as the above tactic, but works quite well.

Armour
When against armour they tend to be travelling on roads. First, I line my self up with the road. Then I set throttle down to anything below 30% and above 15%. Then get down to a comfortable altitude of 200m and by then your speed should be roughly 220 mph. Then, as all your targets are right in front of you in a nice line, let 'a rip and you will notice a long line of flames which were once Nazi tanks.

The FW is much better up high

if it can get to about 5000m and well everyone is at 2000m just BnZ it works

also at 7000m you start to produce contrails so try not to go up that high if your online :D

PS. If you're in a Spitfire whilst in a dogfight get low. The Spitfire was designed in such a way that at low altitude it could out-perform almost any aircraft of that period.
In Luftwaffe Me-109 guides given to German pilots during the war it stated that you should never follow a Spitfire in a dive, as it WILL get you if you go below 2,000 ft.

True, it is. It's just that i'm a speed freak and like the look of the plane hitting 600.

I have a good time in the Brewster  8-)  Although the Yak-3 and the Sea Fire are a blast as well.

After I get shot down over the ocean, and when the smoke clears, I like to fire every thing I've got on board and blow myself to smithereens!  :)
