6600 GT Problem with Start-up ... Driver Advice?

Postby AKOM » Fri Feb 03, 2006 6:12 pm

Hey, i have just gotten a new computer with

-Athlon 64
-n vidia GeForce 6600 GT
-1024 MB of ram

i am confused with how to update drivers because I'm a real newbie.  I'm pretty sure that the driver issue is the one that is causing that splash screen to freeze at start-up.  I'm sure questions like this have been asked and answered and i have scanned through the forum but i cant seem to find anything close to my specs.

Help would be greatly appreciated  :)

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html

Follow that link to download the latest drivers. Should work fine. I've the same card and it works a treat. ;)

hey thanks for the response but i downloaded the driver update from that link that you had sent me and when it had finished downloading and i tried to run it, windows had blocked it because of something about the publisher.

Any more suggestions or ways to fix this based on my specs?

I believe in the installation you get a box saying something along the lines of "this publisher hasn't been verified be M$ and therefore my harm your computer yadda yadda etc". It then gives you the option to install anyway or stop installation. Choose the install anyway option and it should work.

Ok... Though I warn you, once I've found drivers that cause no problems, I tend to stick with them. :)

Well I've just installed Scanias drivers. Looks fine so far. Tomorrow I shall do some extensive testing to see if there are any problems. (Basically I'm going to play H&D2 and CFS3 and play "spot the difference") ;D

another thing.  I downloaded that 3D Guru one and i said for it to run.  I just told it to extract the files to the default location that came with the dialog box.

Should I be expecting something like a wizard to come up? OR should I have extracted it to a different location?  OR have i done it right and now its just a case of starting the game up and seeing if it works?

Sorry for being annoying but I am an ultra noob when it comes to stuff like this.

I'm guessing that step-by-step instructions would be pretty helpful and much more easier.

Browse the extracted folder, locate "Setup.exe" and double click, follow the on-screen prompts, you should be good to go (after a re-boot)

Hi AKOM,

If you're using Windows XP, it will often mark files downloaded from the net as "potentially suspect" as a safety precaution and then block access to them as a result.

You can manually unblock any downloaded file you think is "safe" by right-clicking on the file, selecting the "Properties" option and clicking the "Unblock" button.  (See attached example).

Hope that might help ...

Cheers - GhostFlyer   ;)

Wow thank you so much guys!

It finally worked and I got past that damn screen.  I ended up using 4 Series Scania's driver recommendation only because when I unblocked and tried to run the one that Woodlouse gave me, it gave a warning saying that the file was corrupted.  I am new to this forum and signed up only to fix this problem.  You guys have been more helpful than I could have imagined and I will definitely be on this forum again for anything else CFS 3 or FS 2004 related.

Thanks again,

AKOM

No problem, our collective invoice is in the post!  ;D (j/k)

Glad to see you sorted it.

We were all newbies once, I remember my own similar experiences only too well.  ;)

BTW, Welcome to the Mad house.  :D
