Jet flying tips?

Postby farmerdave » Wed Mar 09, 2005 7:48 pm

Could someone please provide some advice on flying jets, especially at high altitudes?  I finally got the DPC Korea addon to work right, and am now stooging about the skies in an F-86. When trying to make sharp turns I often find the wing dropping and spinning out, especially at high altitudes.  Anyone have any hints?  At the moment I actually feel safer fighting Migs in an F-51. :-[

Keep your speed up. Play around in freeflight and learn what the planes capable of. I should think boom and zoom are your best tactics. ;)

The Sabre isn't too good at high altitudes, and the MiG has the advantage. Drag the MiG down to where you have the advantage and blow him apart.

Of course if you were Flying FOX-FOUR's Korean War campaigns for CFS2, then you'd know this already  8)

MiGs are capable of higher altitudes, but Sabers handle better at higher altitues and speeds...

As woody and the others suggested, 'Hit 'n Run' ;D

Sabres do not handle better than MiGs at very high altitudes, according to a formerly classified comparison document. (Which came bundled with MiG Alley)
Sabres are good, low and fast, whereas low and fast, the MiG tends to wingtip stall, and that's why a lot of nugget MiG pilots just ended up auguring in during low down high speed chases.
Don't take my word for it, read the documents.

Hmm...from what I have read, all the sources agree that Sabers handle better at higher altitues than MiGs... ::)

...but anyway...as long as you get that S.O.B., its all good ;)

From "Central fighter Establishment - The F-86 v The MiG-15, by Squadron Leader W Harbison, Feb - May 1952.

MiG has varying degrees of advantage at higher altitudes in Rate of Climb, Level flight Speed, Turn radius, Zoom, Ceiling, Acceleration.
It is at disadvantage in Steep Dive, Deceleration.

The aircraft are equally matched in Shallow Dive, G limit, Mach limit.

At 0-20,000, The Sabre has a slight roll advantage.

These notes reference the F-86E.

I've just given you a short summary based on a comparison chart.

Maybe things were viewed differently as time passed.
