Who has bomb dropping techniques?

Postby aewest » Sun Nov 02, 2003 11:41 pm

Now that I got the bombsight to work, what are some techniques to hit the targets? At high and low level a) what plane, b) what speed, c) what lines on the bombsight to use?

High and low level bombing -key word "level"

When using a bomber i try to stay as level as i can headed on a flight path that will take my aircraft directly over the target. When viewing through the bomb sight you still have control of the aircraft so Hold altitude as consistantly as possible, minor descent or climb rates not in excess of 500 feet per minute are somewhat acceptable until you get the feel for it. make sure your bomb doors are open!

when the target area fills the center circle of the bomb sight release your bombs at intervals of approximately 2 or 3 seconds.

It helps to have all of your wingmen attack the same target as well. For me this usually places the bombs on target so try it out.

Bombing with fighters it is usually best to dive bomb. Approach from high above your target and dive down onto it at a descent angle of 45 to 60 degrees while also attempting to place your target in your gunsight.

once your descent is stabilized and the target is in your gunsight and things seem steady release your bombs then pull out sharply as to avoid the bomb blast.

watch your speed during dive bombing, if you get to fast recovering from the dive will be impossible.

as you become better and better at these techniques you will take only seconds to set up for a dive bombing run and you can even step up to "skip bombing"

hope these tips helped

With the bombsite simply drop your load when the target is in the circle. With fighters I find divebombing difficult and silly. Take two big bombs and tie them to the bottomof you plane. Now fly towards your target at high speed and low altitude. The low altitude will guarentee accuracy and the speed will allow you to climb rapidly to avoid the bomb blast. At an altitude of about 500 feet drop your bombs while about 500 feet from the target. You will eventually get a feel for the right time to lay your eggs. I can hit a target everytime with these techniques. ;)

I only tried bombing in the Mosquito once (fighter jock, sorry!), but I found entering a shallow dive and then lobbing when I could count the windows on the building a good technique.

steep dive bombing can be an easy way to learn both the technique of bombing accurately as well as the limitations of your aircraft in terms of speed.

I actually use the low approach level bombing as described by woodlouse2002 above. Thats my technique too. I use dovebombing technique as well but only when it is a matter of convienience. most experienced simmers can complete their dive bomb run without adding more than 75 to 100 mph to the airspeed.

the type of bombing woodlouse and I use is advantageous in that you donot have to overcome the aerodynamic load of the speed in order to recover from the dive to avoid bomb blast. however from a learning standpoint you will have to go through several tons of bombs in order to find the "sweet spot," the sweet spot is entirely dependant on speed so it  will not the same position for every aircraft or combat situation. However divebombing works just as well at 400 mph as it does at 100mph it is all a matter mass, inertia, and geometry that puts the explosives onto the target.

Skip bombing works rather well and is something i use on targets that are heavily defended by flack. In this type of bombing you pull back briskly on the joystick and release bombs as you are pulling back. this has the effect of pitching the bombs toward a more distant target, but it can take a while to master this.

Yesterday evening, my wingmen provided the perfect example of how NOT to dive bomb in the P-38J. I had loaded us with rockets AND 500 lb bombs for an anti-ship mission. To my dismay, 3 wingmen proceeded to dive-bomb a cruiser and never pulled out. Splash, splash, splash.

Now, for anti-shipping, I only give them rockets. :)

There seems to be a lot of these kinds of glitches. i have lost countless wingmen to stupidity.

another glitch that i found interesting...

when you shoot down an enemy aircraft and it's pilot bails out, get infront of the aircraft at all and it will shoot aimlessly at you. which i think is a little odd considering nobody is there to pull the trigger!

i shot a 109 last night while playing and in like 3 hits the guy just bailed out of a still perfectly good airplane. I know it was perfectly good because it flew without a pilot in a wings level slight climb for about 10 miles as i realized what had happened and chased it trying to shoot it down!

I've even lost wingmen on the ground. :)  While waiting to take off, I heard these loud BANGS! behind me. Rearview shows 2 of my wingmen have managed to blow themselves up on the runway.

Seems to happen most often as British, with Spits.

the explosions while dropping fuel tanks sometimes happens to me and wingmen when we are damaged a little bit. and occasionally when we are just taking off

Face it, the AI in this game could use a little IQ boost... :)  I have had several enemy planes ram me though.  I'll be on their tail, they hit the brakes and SMACK!  I love it when I take off two wingmen collide trying to form up.

Does anyone know the percentage of planes lost to crashes like this during the war?  If I remember, crashes weren't uncommon at all.

Yes i do find that on the runway my wingmen colide with each other quite often .... im embarrased to be in the squadron with them.

bombing.. i love it
i barrel role then dive straight down drop the bombs then pull out simple as that...
dont try and correct to much in the dive other wise you will end up as a floor piece at the enemys feet

Who has bomb dropping techniques?

Well I dropped a rather nasty one in the canned vegetable aisle at the local grocery. Walked to the end and turned around so I could see the looks on peoples faces as they walked through it. That is my favorite bombing technique. Very entertaining, but somehow, I do not think that is what you were asking. But I liked telling it anyway.  ;D
