AI Dogfighting Logic Explained

Postby Whiskey_Zulu » Sat Jul 19, 2003 7:21 pm

The AI Dogfighting Logic in this game seems fairly simple, and quite predictable to me.  Keep in mind these don't apply in a surprise attack, or if your opponent is severly damaged.

1. They always turn to the inside.  This is the smart thing to do, but some stupidity would make things more interesting and realistic.

2. If you are approaching from behind but are equal or slower in speed than your opponent, he will begin a climbing turn (to the inside).  If he's going fast enough, he may do a loop.  He always does this at the same point, so you never get closer than about 350-400 yards unless you can speed up to remove his speed advantage.   He will continue to climb & turn until you are no longer close behind him--until you are below.

3. If you are approaching from behind but are faster than your opponent, he will begin a diving turn.  The closer you get, the tighter he turns.  However, if you surprise them, their first turn is usually upwards, but all the subsequent turns once they are aware of you are in accordance with your speed (you slower = they climb, you faster = they dive).

Once you keep this in mind, you always know what the AI pilot is going to do.

Anyone agree/disagree?  Have anything to add?

Having read many accounts of dogfights during WWII I have to say that I think the AI on CFS3 is pretty good.
Many pilots on both sides point out that they were equally highly trained and fit, so it really came down differences in the performance of their aircraft.
Sure the AI can sometimes be a little predictable, but then in real dogfights so could the enemy!

I don't care.  I don't really like challenges.  3 mile jog?  Aces?  I think I'll just take on some rookies while eatin' a hoagie! ;D

I know this off subject in a way, but

I changed all the AIs in CFS2 to WW1 planes and
there is nothing predictable about them now,
damnedest thing I've ever seen, Dogfighting
at 100 FT and less and planes all over the
place!
I wish I could upload the program some how!!
