Multiplayer (Protocal error message)

Many of the multiplayer games I try to join bring up a
protocal error message.
What updates do I need to download to play on these servers?
It seems there are more and more of them every week.

All I needed was the damn 3.1 upgrade!!!
Why was that so hard to figure out?
