? Changing gunsight color

The latest Air Battle game from Microsoft! Running on an entirely new platform, CFS3 is raising it's fair share of problems & opinions - Good & Bad!

? Changing gunsight color

Postby Boxer » Thu Mar 06, 2003 9:18 am

Hello,
In CFS3, is it possible to change the gunsight color to anything other than black? When flying campaign missions in low light conditions, or when attacking a ground target when the background is dark, it's a little
difficult to acquire the target.
Thanks,
Boxer

Hi Boxer,

Yeah, there is. I downloaded a tiny file (6kbs) from somewhere but I forget where. It's called "Reticule.dds" and the file changes the crosshairs to a bright yellow. I really like it. You just replace your old "Reticule.dds" file with this one. You can store the old one in another folder and switch it back if you choose. But for some reason I noticed that the crosshairs will occasionally revert back to black ... don't know why.

Maybe someone can tell you where to get it from or you can PM here with your email address and I can send it to you.

Hello Bobc1,
Thanks for the response. If you can remember where you got the file from...that would be most appreciated. But if you can't, then please attach the file to an e-mail and send it to me at:
David_Puskaric@BMC.COM
Thanks again!

Boxer,
the reticledds file you are looking for should be available at http://www.sim-outhouse.com, if you can't find it there it's at http://www.flightsim.com. To install follow the directions in the readme and to keep it from reverting back to the original gunsight make sure you copy the br_reticle.dds or us_reticle.dds or gr_reticle.dds into your main CFS3 folder and not the shared folder in the aircraft folder.

I formatted and clean installed XP since I last had the yellow gunsight installed. I just tried to install the old one from Wildbat and now his new one "yellowhud2" and neither of them work. I followed his directions. I don't know.

The file is at:

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/index.php?l ... -utilities

If you'd like to try a good post WWII jet aircraft get the F9-F2 from Mudpond.

Hi Bogey51,

I don't understand what you're saying. Should I make copies of
br_reticle.dds or us_reticle.dds or gr_reticle.dds

and paste them into the CFS3 main folder. Do you mean "AND" or "OR" as in ALL of the different countries reticle.dds or just the ones I want to have a yellow gunsight?

Why doesn't Wildbat explain this in his "Read Me" file? Grrrrrr.....

And screw Flightsim. I really get tired of trying to enter that website. They like pulling your chain by having you try 100 times just to get in. I'll fly with no gunsight at all before I go there again!!! I wrote them before about the "All nodes are busy" crap and they told me to pay for a subscription. I don't think so! I have never ever, ever, ever gotten into that website without at least 25 tries. I think they try to "frustrate" people into buying a subscription.

Okay, calm down bobc1. It's only a game and this too will pass.  :)

Hi Boxer,

Okay, I calmed myself down and figured it out. Something about that Flightsim website that REALLY gets to me!  :-[

I "copied" all three "br_reticle.dds, us_reticle.dds and gr_reticle.dds files from the CFS3 aircraft/shared folder and pasted these copies into the main CFS3 folder. I then just copied the newly downloaded reticle.dds file into the CFS3/aircraft/shared folder and all is well. Of course, after backing up the original "reticle.dds" file.

The older yellow reticle.dds file from WildBat is identical to the black one that is "stock" in CFS3. The newer yellow one that WildBat made that is currently available at the sim-outhouse website is a version from CFS2. I'll have to try out the newer one to see which one I prefer.

I'll email you the older version so you'll have both.

Thanx for the info Bogey51.

G'day.

You can get a bright yellow copy of the stock CFS3 reticle at http://www.chapshq.com/.  This is the site that gave us "Defence of Australia" in CFS2.

Hey Bobc1,
what I meant was backup or change the name of whichever reticle you want to change in the aircraft shared folder. When you unzip the new reticle file, put it in the main CFS3 folder instead of the aircraft shared folder. Mine kept changing back also until I did this.
