Then perhaps a Tench?

Saving the best for last...the Tenchs were the last class of US subs to serve in WWII.

All three classes of boats (Gato, Balao and Tench) went through various phases of armament consisting of 3" and 5" deck guns (fore/aft/both), plus 40mm and 20mm.
