That 'dark' spot

Just curious, on the USS Lexington model (and others, I assume) there is a dark spot just foward of the tailfan. Anyone know what this is?

im not 100% sure, but i believe its supposed to sort of portray a reinforced area of the flight deck, maybe to make it appear as steel, rather than wood(?) where the impact of a plane in a controlled crash would try to plant its feet. almost like a reference to "put wheels here!" sort of thing
