cfs2 mission builder serious problem?

Dear all
I opened a stock cfs2 mission while in mission builder, and flew it (from mission builder). I was soon shot down, and I quit from the mission at the de-brief.  I was  returned to mission builder. I then loaded a small mission I had built myself, and started to fly it - again from mission builder. CFS2 crashed immediately - and I was back on the desk top. [this small mission had been flown before-with no problem]

I re-started cfs2 right away -which was fine - but I soon found a serious problem. My Win98se system has gone to the dogs-permanently!
For example: I cant open any word document from its icon, I  cant open the "control panel" screen via the start button, cant burn CDs, etc etc. If I try any of these, the system just hangs. I can get round the problem with "ctrl alt del", and then go on to some other task - and  all games seem to work fine. My internet connection also works well- as you can see.

I've scanned the system files and most others for viruses- and havent found any.
Any advice?

Hi roc-head. Not sure this will be much help but we have to start somewhere. I can't think why CFS2 crashing would affect your system permanently. Did you think of rebooting your PC?

It's possible that files normally opened with Word (like the DOC format) have somehow become associated with another program. This should be easy enough to change by right-clicking on any icon & selecting Properties.

thanks for the reply.
I have tried re-booting - the problem wont go away.
Also: When I right click a doc file, it looks OK (well, it still says ".doc" in properties).

a bit more info :
I said I could work round this, with a series of "ctrl-alt-del"s. When I do this the first time after booting, I get the message "lwtest not responding". When I do it a second, third, fourth, etc time, I get the consistent message "explorer not responding".
My guess is these messages refer to lwtest.lgc and explorer.lgc, both in the Windows/Applog folder.
"lwtest" is to do with my Logitech joystick, i think. Maybe that's the problem somehow.  Any help?

Hi Roc-Head. I would like to help but I'm not the best person to give advice on this problem. If programs aren't responding directly after starting the PC it sounds to me that your Windows registry has somehow been messed up. This sometimes happens for no apparent reason. I find a regular system check with a diagnostic application like Norton Utilities usually fixes these problems & improves performance.

I don't wish to worry you & think it's unlikely in this case but you also have to consider the problem is caused by a virus.

PS. If you suspect the joystick you could check out the connections & try reinstalling the software.

Have you tried a system restore? Or does Windows98 not offer system restore?

Would'nt suprise me if it's WinXP Chris, seems a lot of reported problems are using WINXP.
I'm on WIN98se ,there's no system restore for us peasants....

Roc-Head mentioned in his original question that he's on Win98 SE. You're quite correct & it has no System Restore but I've never had any success with that feature on WinMe which does.

I suspect Hagar was right - it was probably a virus!
I had to re-format the disk!

Sorry to lead you on a wild goose chase.
I found no problem with cfs2 or its mission builder.

My apologies to microsoft.
CFS2 mission builder is terrific.

Roc-head,

Found that if you can, partition your HDD into 2 or more drives and instal cfs2 onto "D" or "E" drives.
If summat goes wrong with your system you can then reformat "C" and still have your sims untouched.
Also less files for a virus to hide in as they tend to concentrate in "C" and attack programs there.

Hehe, its nice to run across an old dinosaur such as myself every now and then. I am a WindowsME user, too.

I have used system restore several times on non-CFS2 issues and it has worked flawlessly and always saved my butt- BUT- and this is a large BUT- I have never used it successfully to solve a problem with CFS2- I have tried- but it has never worked.

Thankfully, I have always been able, by hook or by crook and with lots of help from those who know more than me to get the problems solved. The forums here and elsewhere are priceless repositories of shared experience and know how!
